We were almost ready to go. There were a few very quibbling moments as we transitioned from the security of the van to the thought of an open trail, a feeling probably comparable to the to the reluctance of diving into a cold lake. I relied on the van door pillar for balance as I groped for my poles, trying my best to hide these difficulties. I don't think that we were really looking at each other now, but through the side of my eyes I believed my daughter tumbled backwards as she was putting on her backpack, fortunately not to the ground. I am almost certain that, like me and despite her practice drill the night earlier, she was also not fully prepared for the weight.…

My six word memoir was “Fought through the labyrinth of solitude” because I wasn’t really alone physically because I had my family but none of them understood me or I couldn’t show them I true self, like who I really am. It wasn’t really easy to do because I felt insecure even though I shouldn’t feel that way. I stayed true to myself and I kept that in mind and it gave me the strength to push through. So mentally I was me but outside I was a totally different person that everybody expected me to be but even though I had some faith that that would end someday.…

During the nights of the battle, the constant deafening noises of the enemy shells, bombs, and explosives made gave me nightmares.…
