Personal Narrative: Sex Trafficking

Decent Essays
Watching “Sold” was very eye opening. Not only did it hit a deep spot in my heart, but it also made me more aware of sex trafficking. I knew sex trafficking was a thing, I just didn't know it was this big of a thing. Seeing a family sell their child for money shouldn't be a thing. No one should have to go through that, no matter how poor or desperate they are.
I can't really wrap my head around someone being sold for sex. Seeing Lakshmi kick and bit that one man was very empowering, but it backfired on her. She's just an innocent thirteen year old who is trying to get a tin roof for her family, but instead is being forced to sleep with creepy old men. When she refuses, she get beaten and her debt just keeps growing. One thing Lakshmi never

The foods that we eat are intimately connected to human trafficking and slavery mainly because the people who harvest the fruits and vegetables we eat are often people who have been kidnapped to work as slaves. This practice is tolerated mainly because labor laws are outdated and go all the way back to the time of the Great Depression (Source 1). These labor laws are rarely ever enforced harshly. The tomato growing industries in South Florida is one of the largest benefactors that use enslaved workers to harvest their crop. Benefactors that use house slaves have them in deplorable conditions and beat them if they are too sick or weak to work.…

Ideologies that Trafficking is a manifestation of a patriarchal culture, ruled by desires for dominance and control. The term can actually perpetuate such dominance, implying that “victims” are subordinate to “rescuers.” The patriarchal system legitimizes men’s control over women. The quest for power, control, and belonging fuels the human trafficking crisis in our communities and around the world. Men’s constant insecurity about their status in relation to other men means that most never truly feel dominant.…

Sex; it’s always been a hot topic. It’s always been the case that humans, in their base nature, are instinctive creatures and often act on animalistic desires, especially those of a sexual nature. As one so often hears, in the media and in the world around us; “sex sells”. The phrase itself came about through the corroboration of sexual acts, both paid or unpaid, private or public. In the world of today, sex is everywhere in the media, yet paid sex, or prostitution, is so often looked down upon.…

I attended the Not My Life film showing on 11/17. The film was about human trafficking, and the horrors of it as well as the stories of some survivors. Some of the horrors that the victims are sold into range from prostitution to labor. The victims are usually children, and these horrors not only take place in third-world countries, but also right here in the United States, as was the case with Angie. Angie was one of the survivors of human trafficking, more specifically prostitution, and she was a normal American girl from a wealthy family.…

Human trafficking is one the world 's largest illegal crime rings that profits from the sexual and physical exploitation of individuals making it a violation of human rights. Annually there are about 17,500 victims that are smuggled into different countries such as the United States, and are forcefully trafficked into a variation of crime rings (Chisolm-Straker, 2006). Human trafficking is most often described as a form of modern day slavery because of its mistreatment and exploitation of the trafficked individuals (Lee, 2007, p.1). There are several situations that lead to the trafficking of individuals, and victims are forced to work in a number of different markets. This includes areas such as manual labour where victims are often left…

In humantrafficking.org states that “victims of sex trafficking are often found in the streets or working in establishments that offer commercial sex acts, i.e. brothels, strip clubs, pornography production houses”. This is a prime example on how the victims are put to work and making money for the head leader that took them away. My significant other is the director of a drug treatment center, and we volunteer at End Slavery Cincinnati so trafficking is something I’m a bit familiar with. Human Trafficking is just a modern way to say Slavery, maybe it sits better on the tongue of some. It happens in every country, in every city and probably closer to most of us than we would have ever thought possible.…

Last week, Boston College 's R.E.A.C.T (Rallying Efforts Against Contemporary Trafficking) group hosted a panel on trafficking called Breaking the Chains: A Panel on Human Trafficking. For a compelling hour and a half the four speakers (Eileen Campbell, Jasmine Marino, Stephanie Clark, and Sarah Durfey) gripped the audience with true tales of the contemporary slave trade both in the U.S and abroad; while dispelling rumors and myths associated with human trafficking today. Human trafficking is nothing like what we see portrayed in hollywood. It is not neat or glamorous and Liam Neeson I not saving women left and right. In this film showing young girls’ family on process of getting their daughters to be married off or sell them off to begin prostitution career makes me feel desperate to be there to stop families from selling these girls. Knowing how normal it is for some countries to have young girls starting from age nine years old to start prostitution is sickening and terrifying. I just could not relate myself to them, and understand how they would feel because I have never experienced nor seen it in real life of these situations and I bet it would be much painful than how I imagine their lives would be. During the film, I was just surprised how some mothers are encouraging their daughters to begin prostitution, and even when school teacher was telling her that she can have better future earning more money without selling their bodies. Realizing how some countries have their traditional mindset yet to be broken still when it is 2016 worries me for women’s future…
