Personal Narrative: Serving Homelessness

Improved Essays
Volunteering at the Pine Street Inn, one of the largest nonprofit organization in New England serving homeless men and women, affected me to deeply fathom homelessness. I came on Sunday mornings at 5 a.m as a lunch lady, serving healthy well-proportioned breakfast meals that unfortunately, would not suffice their hunger. I was terrified and apprehensive of what was to come. I caught myself on the first day in thinking these individuals as subhuman. I thought I would be serving shaggy crazy individuals. Instead, they were all kinds of individuals that would not fit the stereotypical homeless man. I took it the wrong way when they greeted me and refused to reciprocate the longing of respect. It was a mistake for me to reinforce those misconceptions

I carefully considered the question, which drew me to ask myself how society typically treats the homeless and helpless within a variety of situations. We certainly feel bad for them, however in those circumstances, do we always take action? Additionally, in situations where homeless presence is unwelcomed, they are often chased off in a typically demeaning manner. Ascher states, “We want to protect ourselves from an awareness of rags with voices that make no sense and scream forth in inarticulate rage,” thus demonstrating her thoughts as to why we shy away from those who so direly need our help. Ascher then provides hope.…

My interpretation of homelessness is, homelessness is a problem faced by people who lack a secure and affordable place over their head. Throughout the sessions I gradually learnt more about people suffering due to homelessness and what they did on a day to day basis. We read the poem ‘Hungerford Bridge’ - written by Katie Campbell, to help us understand the stereotypes that are used against homeless people and how the stereotypes contribute to the attitude towards the homeless society. In one session we had to explore the higher class people 's attitude towards the homelessness people.…

In the article, “Homeless, Mike Dick Was 51, Looked 66,” author Kevin Fagan stated that “The nation needs to commit, emotionally and economically, to saving these older folks” (321.) The older folks referred to in the article are homeless people that live across the United States. Fagan maintained that the nation can do better in terms giving back to the needy, especially considering the wealthy of the nation. However, what Fagan failed to mention in the article is what the homeless are not doing for themselves. Long time homelessness is a predicament that can only be blamed on the homeless because people that wind up homeless for whatever reasons are capable of changing their situation.…

Every day, volunteers and staff prepare a warm meal for the homeless. In her article, Lauren Mascarenhas stated “The organization aims to set aside blame and judgment as they aid the homeless” (Mascarenhas). This view of the homeless is very humble. When the staff is helping them out, they do not see them as people who sleep on the street everyday, in contrary they see past that and they treat them as if they were from a higher class.…

Early upon entering the College of Social Work I became interested in the homeless population. In my junior year, I took the time to volunteer with the Renaissance Community Center, an organization that provides various services to Homeless individuals in Tallahassee. Volunteering here taught me about people and the effects of interpersonal communication, how the availability of services can aid people during personal crisis, and the limitations of resources and access on a vulnerable population such as the homeless. This experience is valuable to me as it increased my interest in the population and my awareness of how it intersects with values and the purpose of social work.…

San Diego is known as America’s finest city and its citizens crowd the streets begging for help. I yearned to answer their pleas. My first act to help the homeless population was to feed them. I created food drives at my high school and as the Key Club president had the chapter feed the homeless every month. However, through feeding the homeless, I discovered an abundance of displaced young children and teenagers.…

For many years, society has looked down upon the homeless because of their social status. People have been given the notion that the homeless are in the situation that they’re in because of many taboos that society looks down upon like alcohol, drugs, and gambling. People should be showing the homeless compassion and offer help, instead are met with mean actions and awful words towards their way of life. Not all homeless people are in their situation because of addictions. There are a great number of homeless people out there who are veterans that struggle with mental disorders that they received from past wars, such as PTSD, that do not allow them to live a normal life.…

Diversity Portfolio Most people walk blindlessly through life, every day, oblivious to their surroundings. We are often so caught up in our own “world” (e.g. social life, work, bills, and stress), that we fail to realize what is happening within the “real world”. However, if we actually open our eyes and see the world through the lenses of other; we would not see things just as black and white, short or tall, peacefulness or chaos. We would see what I like to call, “chaotic beauty”. What I mean by that, is our society has become so diverse (e.g. ethnicity, religion, sexual orientation, political views, and the spoken language), that it is being met with resistance, causing chaos and division among Americans.…

Growing up in a southern Alabama town of less than 10,000 residents, I was not truly aware of the issue of homelessness. Homelessness was only a subject which I had seen in the news and in movies. However, when I became a peer helper as a junior in high school, my perception soon changed. I became part of a peer mentoring program, in which I counseled underprivileged and troubled middle school students. Through this program I discovered that homelessness was not a problem rooted in major cities, for it lied even in a town as small my own.…

The root cause of my project is that the homeless don’t have the essential basic needs to sustain their health. My project will help around 100-200 homeless individuals, supplying them with a custom pillow, which will allow them to carry essential items which I will collect and donate, such as a book, a handwritten letter, various toiletries and food, that will be given to new or existing client of Hope’s door. I plan to interview several individuals at Hope’s Door and learn about their stories and their needs. Through this I hope to motivate and provide for the homeless. I hope that in all they are given, they will feel more ‘at home’ at the homeless shelter.…
