Personal Narrative: Servant Leadership At Rockford, Illinois

Improved Essays
Trudging through damp, snake infested grass, I reached down and started to collect hundreds of cans, wrappers, and other miscellaneous trash items. As I walked through this filthy lot, I realized how different this area of Rockford, Illinois was from my home town. With the help of over 200 workers, including myself, we were able to change the face of many people's lawns and hopefully inspire the house owners to change their habits forever.
The club I am involved with at school that allowed me to participate in project 10-13, the annual cleaning of an area of Rockford, is Servant Leadership. This club is a combination of surrounding high schools that meet monthly at Highland Community College to learn about leadership qualities and collaborate

”… I have laid the foundation, and another buildeth thereon. But let every man take heed how he buildeth thereupon” (1 Cor. 3:10 KJV). Just as Christ talked about laying the foundation in his word, individuals should be able to do the same in their everyday life. It is important for businesses/ organization to set a mission statement so that they may abide by it and also it can be a constant reminder of where they have been and where they are trying to go.…

The Leadership Challenge discusses “strengthen (ing) resilience” (pp 206). I am the kind of person who wants all of my ducks in a row so when one or two are out of line, I get flustered not to mention overwhelmed to the point wanting to quit. The past few years have been one of loss in various ways; my father’s passing, my beloved pet for nine years passing, my husband’s illness, the loss of our house as well as the loss of my husband’s and partner’s business. Even though we are still reeling with the impact of what we have been hit with, we continue to encourage one another emotionally to look ahead, not dwell on the past.…

Before embarking on my high school journey at Sayreville War Memorial High School I was told to join clubs. Sophomore year I attended the September SADD meeting. SADD stands for Students Against Destructive Decisions and it is a club that encourages students to confront the daily risks of living in the world today. The advisor, Ms. Corrales, would always pick an issue in society for each meeting and provide us with the best tools to go about handling the issue. During my sophomore year, she invited me to the NJ Regional Conference with our executive board.…

My definition of leadership is very simple: leadership is having the ability to mobilize and empower a group towards a common goal. I find that with a much general definition of leadership as a base, it allows for different styles and theories to come from it. My preferred leadership style, for example, is the servant leadership model. The servant leadership model was formalized by Robert K. Greenleaf. My leadership model, as similar as it may be to that of Greenleaf's, came from home.…

For our civic engagement project for the Redefining Leadership class, my group, Stephanie, Hailee, Christina, and I, decided to volunteer at the Ronald McDonald House in New Haven, Connecticut on a Thursday. Before we got there, we did not know what to expect, but afterwards, we truly felt grateful that we helped out a great cause. The Ronald McDonald House is a charity house that keeps families close to their family members that are being treated at a nearby hospital. We spoke with someone who works at the House and she told us that eight families were there on that day. We were able to see some people and did what we could to help out.…

A leadership experience that had a positive influence in other students lives and my life was having the opportunity to be chosen as a link crew leader. As a link crew leader I participated in organizing the freshman orientation, getting assigned a group of freshman to do activities with, and throughout the year visit a freshman classroom and do activities with them. Those activities varied, disguised as exciting games, they were actually great metaphors for skills that they could apply to high school and through life. I wanted to make this the best orientation ever for them and I wanted to make them feel comfortable because I knew what it was like to be in their positions, I was just as anxious and out of place as they were.…

Here we are decades later in the 21st century, still wrestling with the paradoxes and theories of leadership. Well, interestingly, the concept of servant leadership over the years still draws attention among scholars, theologians, and researchers in our culture and society today. Arguably, the concept of servant leader has led debates and thought provoking question, as to whether the leader is consider servant first? Greenleaf sets the stage for his contemporary audience’s inquiry into his own understanding of servant leadership that officially began as a theory in an essay titled (“The Servant as Leader”), which he describes as, “It begins with the natural feeling that one wants to serve, first. Then conscious choice brings one to aspire…

During this year’s football games, fans would leave bottles and trash all over the bleachers. A friend and I saw that an organization called, “Keep Brownsville Beautiful” wanted volunteers to pick up bottles we tried to encourage and told all our friends who needed community hours to come pick up plastic bottles. We made it a sort of fun gathering and about six to twelve friends would help out at least every home game. Cleaning up the bleachers, looking at them clean, and spending time with friends made me realize that if we can get some friends to help out we can encourage a whole club.…

My first leadership experience came from being a voluntary work as a life- and management skills trainer, where I had to deal with different background, minds and studies trainees, to be the leader of my own session, the thing that let me build my communication, discussion and presentation skills. During this period I have met so many people with various way of thinking, where I succeed dealing with them each time. After that I started working as assistant supervisor in a psychological support centre for the international medical corps, where I had the chance to deal with very professional and creative people, the hardest thing was being accepted as the youngest member of the team and to be known as a leader , but being in this atmosphere…
