Over the years I have met new people and learned many things in the short time I have been apart of band. Four years I never thought I would be lead trumpet, and be able to play at a higher level. I could go on for hours about how much band has taught me.
One of the biggest things that band has taught me is how to cooperate with my peers. Everyone that has ever been in band knows how hard it is to get everyone to coperate and find their spots. I have especially found out how hard it is to get everyone to get along being the trumpet section leader, and for some reason trumpet players are notoriously wild. Being a section leader taught me a new level of leadership. At first it took some time getting used to having a group of people look up to

The Leadership Challenge discusses “strengthen (ing) resilience” (pp 206). I am the kind of person who wants all of my ducks in a row so when one or two are out of line, I get flustered not to mention overwhelmed to the point wanting to quit. The past few years have been one of loss in various ways; my father’s passing, my beloved pet for nine years passing, my husband’s illness, the loss of our house as well as the loss of my husband’s and partner’s business. Even though we are still reeling with the impact of what we have been hit with, we continue to encourage one another emotionally to look ahead, not dwell on the past.…

Friona has many unique events that distinguish us from the many other bijou towns all around it. There’s the cheeseburger festival, which, being the “cheeseburger capital of the Texas”, is a must. They have Maize Days to celebrate their community’s people and businesses. And then there’s Friona High School’s own Chieftain Challenge that, like its name states, challenges its students. The Chieftain Challenge began with a couple of students trying to come up with a good idea for their Family, Career, and Community Leaders of America (FCCLA) project.…

Successful organizations all require 2 things: a strong team and strong leaders to direct the team to victory, and the Marching Pioneers is no exception to this rule. With an ensemble as large as the Marching Pioneers, there is no physically possible way 4 top tier leaders can give everyone the attention they need. Section leaders are necessary for the success of our fine organization, and there’s nothing more satisfying than being part of a leadership team that can add to the already growing success of this talented group. Here are just a few reasons why I would like to be in the next generation of saxophone section leaders. To be a section leader is like being given a lump of clay and being told to mold into the Statue of David.…

The band as a whole is looking up you and see you as a leader, which means you need to become that responsible and reliable role model needed. I feel like I have already possessed these traits and would excel in this area. As an older sister and aunt, I have experience in having to be a role model for others. In the past, I have had to take in consideration of how I make decisions and how they would affect those in my family that are younger than me. For example, I am one role model that my little brother has to look up to as an example.…

My heart is beating quickly, my mouth is dry, and as I look at the familiar faces in front of me, their judging eyes make them seem like strangers. I struggle to get them to quiet down and we begin our hour long sectional, which I have to lead. It was the first day of my third year in marching band and at the end of last year, with the graduation of the previous section leader, I was granted his important position. Being a competitive person, I was extremely self conscience of how my section made me look. I hated being blamed for their errors and was exceedingly harsh towards them during sectionals.…

In my senior year of high school, I became the flute section leader. It had been a position I had tried out for once before, my junior year, but lost out to a senior. I was responsible for teaching the rookies and guiding the upperclassman through the processes of learning the show music, the pep band music, and the proper marching technique. In addition, I had to always be prepared for the off chance that someone would forget something necessary for either the football games and competitions. Lastly, I made sure that as a section everyone was in a position to give a hundred percent at every performance.…

When I was in the first grade, I was considered a goody two-shoes because I followed all the rules and got good grades, but I never really believed that I deserved the nickname until one day on the playground. My friends and I decided to play Follow the Leader. As we continued to play the game, we started to sing all of the songs we had learned in class. I began to wonder, are we allowed to sing outside during recess?…

A leader has to multi-task to not only play their role in a group, but also monitor their groupmates’ actions to see if any assistance is needed. The role can be a burden at times, but if a leader truly is dedicated to their job, they do whatever it takes to move their group and themselves forward. This is what we strive as a band to do: move forward. The position as a section leader may seem glamorous, but it takes a lot of time and determination.
