In both the brothers Grimm and my story the mother exists but is absent from most of the story. I decided to have the mother in the beginning because the main character has certain qualities that her mother has given or taught the main character. Another similarity between my story and all of the others is that the main character cries or mourns for the loss of her mother. In my story it says “Everyday Leanna prayed and cried for her mother to return home safe.”…

Depression is another one of those “first-world” problems us humans face as a society. Although it seems like a deathly globe-renowned issue is in mainly todays -mostly in teens- current society, Sue Monk Kidd demonstrates how depression may have affected those over fifty years ago- especially the South-American colored people of the Civil Rights Era in 1964. In The Secret Life of Bees, May, an oddly complex character, changes in the novel because of her depression. May is often portrayed as a very gentle, compassionate and selfless character, who immensely feels the suffering and pain of others on an emotional level because of the death of her twin sister. She changes into a character who is selfish and neglectful as she isolates herself,…

In the article Weitz introduces the terms open concepts versus closed concepts, and describes how they relate to our reasoning of what we consider to be art. Briefly, a concept is how concisely an idea or subject is expressed, and if objects fit into this criteria. If all objects do not precisely fit into these restraints then it becomes an open concept, subject to change. Open concepts, when compared to closed concepts, are not concrete and always up for debate and modification.…
