“ You need not be sorry for her. She was one of a kind that likes to grow up. In the end she grew up of her own free will a day quicker than the other girls”. (J.M Barrie Peter Pan) My mother read me Peter Pan when I was younger and wanted to explain the importance of eventually growing up. She said that growing up is a scary thought for some people, and I am one of those people. The thought of having to take PSAT, SAT, and ACT stress me out, how am I supposed to do well on a test when I don't even know what the acronym stands for? When I was little I imagined having the perfect job and having a family surrounding me. Then again, that’s all that five to thirteen year olds imagine having when they grow up. Marine sciences has been a desired career choice for me since I was seven; this prompted my choice to head back to the east coast. I got started around 1992 and the country was in a recession and there were really no jobs, especially for ex-military. Diving was a passion of mine and this hobby was a passion of mine, so I was able to keep things that others weren’t able to keep and I had special permits from the government to keep things that weren’t typically allowed just to see if we could keep them alive to pull them off of the protect list. At the end however, you grow up for the better. A prime example of this is the protagonist of the novel, Francie Nolan. Keeping in mind that the Nolans have low income, Francie tries not to let it get in her way of enjoying herself with all the small materials she finds. For example, the piano in which they learn how to play like their father, or the conch shell that was found in the living room. Betty Smith conjures up a bildungsroman, or coming of age, novel which shows the maturation of Francie and over time, her fall from innocence.…

“Put some meaning into your words,” said my chorus teacher as apathetic faces and idle mouths stare back at him“ A folk song of this magnitude should not be sung with such a light heart”. My ears tune into the dissonant voices surrounding me slowing interpreting the lack of passion already evident to my teacher. Subconsciously, my eyes and head slowly move downwards trying to shield themselves from the wave of indifference flooding my class. As I open my eyes, I am met with the gaze of the words boldly printed on my sheet of music - Wade in the Water. My thoughts are delayed as the urgent words capture my attention only to be interrupted by a piece of my reality.…

Marine biology has always been a passion of mine ever since I first heard about it when I was four years old. My family has a deep-running connection to the ocean so when they realized how interested I was in science, they suggested marine biology. I loved the concept of studying unknown creatures that sit miles below the surface of our planet that no human has ever seen. I’ve read many textbooks and field guides over the years, which started as an amusing pastime. However, the more I read, the more I became completely and utterly engrossed in the subject which eventually shaped me into what I am today.…
