Survivor: Scared White Family Edition There’s a running tradition in my family. Every summer we go to Lake George, NY for a few days. Lake George is the birthplace of some of my most treasured memories with my family. My most treasured, and I must say most traumatizing, memory was the hike of our 2013 trip. This hike had my uncle going on about it hiking on a scenic trail in the mountains with a gorgeous view near where we were staying There’s a running tradition in my family. Every summer we go to Lake George, NY for a few days. It is the birthplace of some of my most treasured memories with my family. My most treasured, and I must say most traumatizing, memory was the hike of our 2013 trip. This hike had my uncle going on and on about it for hours, with its scenic breathtaking views of Lake George and diverse wildlife. My mom, sister, dad, and stepmom were uninterested. So, alas, my aunt, uncle, cousins, brother, his girlfriend, and I were off. None of us had the slightest idea of what we were in for. When we arrived to the trail, I took a glance around at my family. My uncle Bill, a short, chubby, stereotypical Italian man, was lighting a cigarette. My cousin Kristin, blonde and thin wearing shorts and a tank top, asked at him to put it out, as we were “in nature where the air is fresh”. My aunt Karen, with hair as black as …show more content…
There we were, hiking in the mountains of Lake George for four and a half hours. Concern began to overcome our group, as this trail was supposed to be about a three hour hike. My aunt handed me the last water. The refreshing taste of it comforted me, as I was starting to have those worried thoughts again. What if we never find the way out? What if there’s some psychotic murderer that’s been following us this whole time, ,just waiting for the right moment to jump out and strangle us all to death, and our bodies are never found because we are in the middle of nowhere. What if I never see my

Heather went on practice hikes but she felt it was unnecessary to attend other classes because Heather’s family is well experienced with going on these kinds of trips. “It has 34 staffed camps and 55 trail camps that provide an unforgettable adventure in the high country along hundreds of miles of rugged, rocky trails”(Scouting.org). Heather would be outdoor hiking for ten days in “Tent City”, she started off packing her clothes, tent, first aid kit, and tons of food. “Food is very heavy”, she said. She went with Christian, who is a classmate, some of her close friends, and her older sister.…

A Loss Is Never Easy To some people September 11th marks just another anniversary of the attack on the twin towers, but for me it has a completely different meaning. Every year my family takes a trip to Branson Missouri for a weekend in early September, we all stay in a resort right on Table Rock Lake. It has always been my favorite vacation, I get to spend time with my cousins, aunts and uncles, and my great grandma and grandpa. The year 2011 was different though, my great grandma had been getting pretty sick and her and my great grandpa stayed home. I had no idea that 2011 would change my life forever.…

I was outside taking Covo for another walk, to find when I came back everybody was getting ready for a hike in the hills. So I quickly changed into some hiking shoes and shorts, and then we were off to the hills. Everybody went for the hike, including my Grandparents. We hiked for about three hours until the trail ended, and then headed back to my Uncle 's house. We had some lunch at a park, and my parents were busy catching up on talk with my Grandparents, Aunt, and two Uncles.…

He was all the way up the main channel and didn’t have the GPS. Good thing Danny [my dad’s youngest brother] came to save my boat [my dad and Scott own a boat together].” My dad uses a playful tone when describing vacation stories and conveys to the listener that vacation is a time of laughter and fun. Also, the way the participants tell stories of our summer home shows the importance to my family’s identity. The time spent in the middle of the wilderness at our camp is like no other experience, and other’s find it difficult to understand. Thus, it would not be a Baker family gathering without talk of our vacation…

Our leader for this trip was Claire’s cousin, Tom Meier. Tom has had many years of camping experience in Lake of the Woods. He recommended camping on the southeast end of Shammis Island. We decided to paddle from Middle Island to Shammis Island and planned to kayak around 12 km each day. My Uncle, who is an avid paddler, has a cabin on Middle Island and he very kindly allowed us to borrow two of his kayaks for our journey and use his cabin as a starting point!…

I had never seen a mountain before besides in pictures. The feeling of being on the top of a mountain is hard to describe, but I love to do it I could do it for hours. I crave the feel of being lost between mountains so much so that I have vowed to never go a year of my life for the rest of my life without being on top of a mountain somewhere in the world. I even completely changed my career path after my trip to the Rocky Mountain National Park and I got a tattoo to celebrate it. In July of the summer of 2014 my family loaded up into my mother’s light blue subaru.. For 10 extremely…

Looking back at my childhood through present day, I would have to say that Priest Lake, Idaho is the one place that has impacted me, and my views on our environment the most. It is my special place. Growing up my family spent a lot of time during the summer up at Priest Lake. We then began spending our Thanksgivings there, renting cabins for 3 days and just enjoying family time, playing card and board games, listening to music, cooking lots of food, and playing in the snow, if it happened to actually snow that year. As my siblings and I got older and started families of our own, we began taking weeklong family camping trips at Priest, boating out to one of the islands.…

The waterfall was the last stop before the hike out of the canyon. For the last month I heard about the horrors of this monstrous hill from the past campers. “A neverending climb, with a great view,” stated one of the runners. Adrenaline flooded my body as we rounded the bend and saw the waterfall. Canopied by the green, luscious trees, stood a couple of counselors with a bucket of water.…
