Personal Narrative: Scalping At Avalon

Scalping at Avalon In my adult life, I have received a multitude of safety courses that I’ve never needed to use. In 2006, I became the Game Master of Avalon, a live action, fantasy, role-playing game also known as a LARP. My then husband was stepping back from his presidency and it fell to me to keep our company afloat. As one of my new duties, I scheduled a first aid and CPR training at the local fire station for my staff members and I, because minor injuries were fairly common in our high-action game.

The instructor sounded muffled and slow to me like the adult characters from Peanuts cartoons, “When you’re treating a head injury, trauma to the scalp or skull, it’s crucial to…”

Why did we stay up all night playing circle of death? I’m never hosting new staff initiation parties the night before an early training ever again!” My head pounded to the rhythm of his voice and I barely resisted the burning urge to close my eyes.
“Learning to identify a severe head injury and give basic first aid can save a life. For severe head injuries…” His monotone mumbling murmured on for an eternity.

Every April, we hosted a convention event for our LARP. Players would come pay to attend the weekend event and would dress and act as their characters in our fantasy world. We would simulate combat with homemade, low impact weapons made from PVC pipe, closed cell foam and duct

Last summer we went to an estate auction that was way out in the boonies on a farm. I was interested in a leaded glass window that was in a pile of old rusty, nasty beds and chicken things leaning up against an old rotting coop. Long story short, I won the window and as we were standing there the iron bed (there was a big brass bed too) went up on the block. We only have company that requires a bed twice a year when my father comes to visit and we had just bought one for ourselves, so I was very surprised when Loving Husband started bidding on and won the antique iron bed you see below. It included a base board, a head board and two side rails.…

Poison Control, Seizures and Tourniquets After taking this course in first aid, has proven to be very useful to people from all walks of life, like the busy parent and working professionals, that I am. There was many thing that I learned from taking this class, but the three things that I found interesting and or could be useful to have up to date knowledge about are, poison control, seizure and tourniquets. If you took a first aid class prior to 2010, like I did then, there’s a reasonable chance you learned to induce vomiting when someone ingests a foreign, possibly toxic substance. It was so popular that people were told to keep ipecac around in the house just in case. It turns out this is a terrible idea.…

In 2013, at football training camp at Carnegie Mellon University, a twenty-two-year-old mechanical engineering graduate student witnessed several of his old teammates suffer concussions. Seeing these events happen to his own friends inspired him to try to start a company. The name of the company is HeadSmart Labs, in which they aim to develop new tests for helmets used in contact sports, guidelines on how they should be worn, and benchmarks for when they should be replaced (Shein). Thomas Healy, the graduate student, first analyzed how often the players regularly inflated their helmets and found that not too many players even bothered to do so, despite players knowing their helmets weren’t fitting properly, and not providing the right amount of shock absorption. After speaking with the coach about regularly inflating the helmets, during a four-week period, none of the players suffered a concussion, which showed often inflating the helmets really worked (Shein).…
