Personal Narrative: Sarah Elizabeth

Sarah Elizabeth came to this earth with a smile and a baby giggle bar none (according to her brother, Warren), the third child of Warren and Martha Jackson Stewart, she arrived in the Summer of 1949. A studious and remarkable musician, she made her parents proud of all her young aspirations and gifts. Love of music, ballet, opera, live theatre, she would encourage others to experience all forms of the arts. Generosity of time, a spirit of kindness, and concern for her fellow man, were just a few of the virtues of this wonderful woman. In difficult times, she could find a silver lining, words of encouragement and finally her sense of humor would show up and for a moment, one could smile and forget your present challenge. During her long and difficult, debilitating health challenges, her ability to travel was limited. So, not only me but most family members enjoyed her long and engaging phone visits. Extremely long phone calls of 3 even 4 hours would be more usual than not, but, we understood her circumstance and accepted it. Conversations were of times past, church happenings (mostly her church), upcoming family events, and of course, most excitedly and importantly that special announcement of our niece’s upcoming motherhood. News of our niece having the first baby in the Stewart Family in over 20 years well, Sarah could not contain her excitement, telling me before our niece could make the announcement herself. Probably for her the best part, our niece was having twins. Sarah’s joy was beyond words. As my best friend, my sister-in-law (but always as sister drop the in-law), she was my confidante. Conversations about Sarah since her death, have been about how she enjoyed family dinners, her effusive joy of conversation, family
