Personal Narrative: San Francisco International High School

Decent Essays
It was really great and I appreciated that I attended a great high school once I moved to the United States. The school I went to in China had poor English skills teachers, so I did not get to learn a lot of English. Then I ended up place in a new high school by the SFUSD office which it just open for 1 year. The name of my high school is San Francisco International High School (SFIHS). Our school is full of new immigrants from other countries. This high school is different from other regular high school in San Francisco because the classes they have in SFIHS perfectly for students who speak English as their second language. Even though SFIHS was not as tough as other high schools, when I first came to this school was not that easy for me.

Furthermore, schools should encourage parents to volunteer and help children practice their language in real-world scenarios outside of the classroom. In order to combat the segregation, language barriers, and adult responsibilities that immigrant children often face, schools should hire translators, educate students about foreign languages and cultures, implement dual-immersion programs, and provide ways to practice language skills outside of the classroom. There are numerous barriers in the education system that prevent immigrant students from receiving an equally excellent education as their U.S.-born peers. Some of these barriers include language barriers in the classroom, segregation, and taking on adult responsibilities.…

I arrived at Rancho Buena Vista High School at 12:00 pm. I waited in a line for about 20 minutes until I reached to the security section. Before we could enter Rancho Buena Vista’s Stadium, we had to be checked for weapons or anything dangerous. I took everything from my pockets and placed them on the table where the securities took a look. Then I was patted down and walked through a metal detector.…

My years in high school were quite thrilling and adventurous. Starting as a freshman, I had no idea where I was going and what was going to be expected of me. Over the years I became involved with extracurricular activities which led to my primary interest I had developed in technology and the sciences. As a freshman I joined the Students with Future Interests in Technology Club, Spanish Club, and Robotics Club. These clubs stayed with me till I graduated high school and I have loved them ever since I got involved in them.…

Reluctantly stumbling through a sea of all different walks of life, I tightly held on to my clunky lunch box as it bumped into every new face I passed. I scrambled around the intimidatingly large campus of Cypress Bay High School searching for my classroom. “Excuse me, do you happen to know where the 300’s building is?” I asked in a shaken voice, but no one seemed to hear me. It was as if everyone spoke a different language that I did not understand.…

The semester before my freshman year I applied to an early college high school; I knew that I was going to have more work than if I had went to the traditional high school, but I knew I could do it. At first I was doing well, but as time went on the work became more challenging and frequent eventually my grades fell and took my pride with it. I wanted to transfer to the traditional high school in my neighborhood, but changed my mind after a talk with one of my professors. She helped me to recognize that if I quit not only would I be throwing away the work that I did do, but I’d also be preventing myself from seeing what work I could do. I took that seed of information and turned it into a tree of motivation.…

Growing up I was always the tallest kid in the class. Whenever class picture day rolled around, I knew that I was in the front of the line because of my height. It was somewhat embarrassing when all the boys were shorter than I, and the girls made me feel bad for how out of place I was. Not only did my height provide social awkwardness, it also administered the constant, never ending struggle of finding garments long enough. Whenever my mom or grandmothers wanted to take me back to school shopping, I made excuses of “I don’t need any more habiliments” or “I do not feel good, all of the sudden…”…

In middle school, I was surrounded by kids who looked and spoke like me, who came from countries like the Dominican Republic, Mexico, and Honduras. I could speak my strange mixture of both English and Spanish without worrying that someone wouldn’t understand me. At Brooklyn Tech, however, I study alongside students from all over the world. Now, I have friends from Bangladesh, Korea, and Poland.…
