One of the first things I noticed as I walked past the famous San Francisco cable cars was his sign. “It’s tradition to tip San Francisco’s street performers because they actually do shit crap to earn money, rather than begging for nothing!” He was sitting on a white rice bucket with a harmonica pressed firmly between his lips, howling out a random assortment of notes. He would occasionally interject with his version of the blues. His lyrics immediately caused us to erupt into a fit of laughter. “I got a great big woman and a itty bitty bottle of wine. Oh, I got a great big woman and a itty bitty bottle of wine. You can touch my woman, ‘cause there’s plenty to share, but you better not touch my wine.” After listening to his song, Mom and I headed towards the line for the cable cars.
We took our place behind an elderly couple and watched the hobo curiously as he began his next song, entitled “The Devil Wants to Buy My Soul for a Gold Coin, But I Already Lost it in a Poker Match.” As the line progressed, I wondered what this man had gone through in life and how he ended up this way. I walked up to him that day thinking I could get some funny and interesting stories for my English project. I came out of the whole experience wondering if I would ever have the courage to live the way he does. On any given night, there are about 107,000 experiencing homelessness in the United States, according to the National Coalition for Homeless Veterans.
