It had been a week since my last weird dream. I had not told anyone, and I was starting to think they were just dreams. Nothing more.
It was the middle of October, and my birthday, which was coincidentally on Halloween, was coming up. It was a rare birthday to have in the Worthy Realm. Usually angels born on Halloween are just a bit crazy—or totally crazy. I was not crazy though. Well, maybe I was rather crazy—but everyone was in some way.
Saturdays meant no classes, which meant I wasn’t planning several ways to murder my professors in my head. Hallelujah. Anna and I were sitting on the ledge of a fountain somewhere on campus. Well actually, I was laying down, staring at the sky. Anna sat near my head talking about the latest gossip from the Gehenna Realms. I couldn't have cared less though. "Right. Uh—can we possibly go somewhere less populated?" Her voice was low like she didn't want anyone else listening to our conversation.
"Why?" Anna retorted. I could tell she was losing her temper, just as I was. Neither one of us was good at keeping out cool.
"Can you just trust me?" Naomi asked in a pleading tone.
I raised an eyebrow and thought about it. Could I trust Naomi? She never gave me a reason not to trust her, but she didn't exactly give me a reason to trust her. After all, she was in cahoots with Kelly, and Kelly can one hundred percent not be trusted. So in all honesty, no, I could not trust this girl. For all I know she can be leading into some trap, or trying to get information out of me.
Just as I opened my mouth to answer Jeremiel's voice sounded through my head again.
“Trust her, Kalmiya.”
Freaked out was an understatement—I was beyond freaked. It wasn’t a comforting feeling to have another’s tone in my own head. My mind was a sacred place where I could keep secrets and other knowledge. If Jeremiel was somehow peeking around in my mind, I was going to end

I immediately quieted down. I felt guilty. She couldn't possibly be friends with me, and there was no way I could have made her tears any better. The pain began slowly, pricking me with its sharp needles only while doing barre in ballet once a week. I ignored it, believing it to be normal, common discomfort that would soon go away, typical thoughts of a dancer whose entire sport is centered around “good pain”. Six months later, it had escalated to the degree that every step I took felt like an arrow to my knee. Dancing had become impossible, and it was determined that I should be taken to the orthopedist. The bland, brown and beige lobby became extraordinarily familiar as I waited two hours to be examined.…
