S is for Surgery S is for surgery. I didn't get put under or anything, or do the whole slice you open, and fix your insides thing. I just got a mole removed. I know that's kind of pathetic, but it wasn't at the moment. I got the mole removed about a month ago. They wouldn't have, but the doctor thought it was a possibility that it might be cancer. It went to the lab, and it wasn't, so everything is good. It left a scar, but I'm glad it's gone. I've had this mole, ever since I was a baby. When I was little, I thought it was a birthmark. When I was about ten, I realized it was bigger. We figured out that it wasn't growing, I was. My skin was expanding, so my mole was too. I think my mom was more scared that I was when they started. While I was enlisted in the US Navy, I was privileged to attend the Naval School of Health Sciences, and study Surgical Technology. I graduated with honors, but unfortunately, the military at the time was not paying for its Surgical Tech graduates to nationally certify. I performed all sorts of surgical cases at the major military facilities I was posted. During my eight years as a surgical tech, I had performed over ten thousand surgical cases, working hand to hand with various surgeons in the operation bed from different specialties which included: General Surgery, Colon and Rectal Surgery, Obstetrics and Gynecology, Ophthalmic Surgery, Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery, Orthopedic Surgery, Otolaryngology, and Urology. As a military surgical…

Before I went to the hospital my family and friends tried really hard to keep me calm before this big endeavor that would change my life forever. One of the things they did was talk to my pastor at my church about blessing me before the surgery. My priest blessed me by saying in a holy voice, “Please God protect Emily from all harm during this surgery, and please be with her during this hard experience.” Another wonderful gesture my family did for me was put on a birthday party, since my birthday was only a couple days after my surgery when I would be still recovering. After the celebration came to a close I went upstairs to go to bed, but before I fell asleep my mother came into the room with a gloomy look on her face.…

I finally realized surgery is an art of soul and science, and not about cutting right away. For the next five years, I hope to join a surgical program at XXXX that will impart a solid foundation in the science and technical practice of medicine while establishing a personal connection with patients I see. Most little girls dream of being a ballerina when they grow up, I was the little girl who dreamed of medical school. Anyone who was brave enough to ask got my vehement no when asked if I thought that the college, subsequent medical school, and training would be too much school or that I would get bored. I decided very early that to be a doctor was one of the most exciting things that a person could chose to be and my fantastic pediatrician was the initial spark for this love of medicine. The care that I could see him exhibit in his daily operations as well as the ease at which he interacted with patients and parents alike inspired me. His knowledge was fascinating and I longed to have that level of understanding of the human body.…

The surgery marked the end of a very long medical journey. It all started when I went to my pediatrician at age sixteen because, unlike other girls my age, I had not experienced my first period. This reflected in the way I looked because I had not experienced the growth which inevitably comes with the change. I tried to wear shirts that would make me feel “sexy” by “hugging the curves”, but instead, these types of shirts hung pathetically because there were no curves to hug. My doctor could not give me a proper diagnosis, so I flew from doctor to doctor.…
