Personal Narrative: Running Through The Abyss Of The Mossy Montana

Improved Essays
There I was, running through the abyss of the mossy Montana forest. All my dreams had come true. As I moved further into the forest, I reflected on my life. I’ve been known for my motivation, and nothing could stop me.
I took pride in my health, and figured that running had made it so I could skip on the health check ups. For some reason, I decided that after 4 years, and increased migraines, I decided to see what was up. I knew that I drunk enough water and I was getting enough sleep. For a month, my head ached and I had called uncle. I expected to get a simple answer like stress or posture or my consumption of processed meats.

Some of my other symptoms sparked up a lot of different questions. The doctor suggested an MRI because she was suspicious. Terrible thoughts flooded through me. I knew MRI’s weren’t good, but I hoped for the best.

According to Robert Charles Wilson in his book Blind Lake, “Understanding is better than ignorance. Ignorance, unlike life, unlike narrative, is static. Understanding implies a forward motion, thus the possibility of change.” (Wilson, 263) Without understanding something, people would never learn anything. Without learning anything, people would become prideful believing that we know everything, when in reality, nobody knows everything.…

    T. Jasmine (2009) discuses two important aspects of therapeutic communication- listening and exploring. Listening as a therapeutic communication technique demonstrates that the nurse is genuinely interested in the patient. When listening to a patient the nurse and nursing student needs to be aware of how their body actions are being portrayed. Posture, facial expressions, and eye contact can be perceived in a positive or negative way to the patient (para. 12). One of the viewpoints on listening mentioned in the journal is a reference from Stickley and Freshwater (2006) discussing how listening is something that the nurse needs to realize within themselves in order to improve communication skills: “listening to oneself and being constantly aware of ones own thoughts and feelings, posture and actions is vital in improving ones skills of listening to others” (Jasmine, 2009, para.…
