I had always looked back on my Student Council experiences like one gazes at postcards hanging across string. Posters of a pizza with my head replacing the pepperoni. Vivacious hallway decorating tournaments. Uncomfortably silent brainstorming sessions at 6:53am on Thursdays. Student Council has defined my high school experience and my intentions beyond its halls—so much so that I had always thought that to find a broader meaning would be to look past its distinct experiences. Running my first contested election forced me to reconsider this conclusion.
Our Student Council boasts a massive population of upperclassmen and a plethora of events, but as a freshman it seemed passionless and hegemonic. And so I ran for office. Uncontested. Twice.
