Personal Narrative: Rubik's Procedure

My tennis coach and piano teacher will never be able to fathom why I spent so much time for this moment. My heart was trying to escape my chest when the speakers called my name, as hours upon hours of frustration were dedicated to what would be (hopefully) only 20 seconds. My trembling hands began flat on a timer, and the judge unboxed the puzzle that engulfed my life for nearly all of high school. I picked up the Rubik’s cube, and began to solve. My first speedcubing competition was in December of sophomore year. My journey was on its way, as I picked up the hobby the summer before high school started. I was fascinated by the cube’s simplicity, despite its inherent complexity. Algorithms and recognition and muscle memory must work in perfect …show more content…
Although I was cut after the second round, as I heard my time, it registered in my head that my growth was already a burning pride of mine. 10 minutes used to be a “good” time, but through practice and even more practice, I began to feel success. I am inspired by my progress with the Rubik’s cube; I can overcome these hurdles with grit and dedication. There will be times when I must start on the bottom, and after years of work, only make it halfway to the top. But to be able to persevere and better myself in the process, that is what I thrive

Cutting precisely on the lines, making sure I didn’t stray and accidently cut out part of an article, I carefully extracted the Sudoku puzzle from the daily newspaper before my father came to the breakfast table to read it. Then, working as fast as I could, I began deciphering the puzzle, eliminating numbers I knew didn’t belong in a certain box and writing, in tiny print, all the numbers that could potentially fit. Gradually, as the pieces came together, the completed puzzle unfolded. I glanced at the clock, scarfed down my cereal (which had gone soggy), and raced out the door just in time to catch the bus. During my hour long bus ride to school I would reflect on how I had solved the puzzle, wondering if there was a better way to approach…

This technique in my mind is the key to succeeding with everything in life,no matter whether it's a job, school, or sports, it will lead you in the right direction. In my case it is sports, I have dedicated my life to the game of football, I have played nearly 10 years of football, and have much more in me, and not yet have I been satisfied with one "achievement" yet. People ask me on my team" Fabias, why don't you celebrate or show emotions during the game" and I respond" because it's not over yet". Or people say "good game" and I have no response, because in my mind I know that what I had done wasn't good enough. Whether it's a 400 yard game and 3 td's or a 2 yard game and no touchdowns, it's the same, because I still have more to prove.…
