I got to see my dad on weekends, so I mostly hung out with my uncles during the weekdays and grew up with them. My uncles were basically like my father figure they all looked out for me, but also showed me a lot of tough love. My uncle's showed me the harsh ways of becoming a man. One time years ago I was with my uncle Jose and my mother we went to our town public pool. I was around thirteen years old, and I didn't know how to swim yet.…
6 months ago, I never would have imagined I’d be signing with the Assumption Swim Team. hn joined executive Swim Club in sophomore year, I had a conversation with coach Brian Crawford, about possible schools i could swim for. He gave me many great choices, but when he mentioned Assumption, I couldn’t take him seriously. I told him that i wasnt of that caliber of swimming, but he refused to listen. He simply told me to keep up the good work, because it would pay off in the end.…
One of the most common mistakes people make is that they define talent and skill synonymously. However, they are two completely different things. Talent you have naturally, you don’t have to work at it. Skill is ability developed from hours and hours of practice at your craft. My best talent is by far my ability to succeed in school, and my natural affinity for STEM topics.…
This past summer, I underwent many swim tests and was finally offered a lifeguarding position at a local town beach and waterpark. I eagerly accepted the offer and was excited to start. When I arrived on my first day, I was informed that there had not been a save in our shallow water facility for the past nine years. But, that nine year save streak ended this summer. A coworker noticed that a man had went underwater and quickly blew a whistle to inform everyone at our facility that there was an emergency.…
I acquired knowledge and skills when I earned a spot on the swim team at Sarah E Goode STEM Academy. I have been waiting since my freshman year for my school to have a swim team. Then they finally got one my senior year. Even though I am not the best at sports, including swimming, I had to be on this team. I tried out and I barely made the team.…
I remembered, first time I tried to learn how to swim with my friend. I was at my friend’s house. We ate delicious pizza together. She wanted to go to the swimming pool at her house, but she knew I was scared of the water. So, she was going to teach me how to swim.…
It was nice cool night and I was going to talk to my parents about me doing swimming and diving this year. I asked my mom what things she did in diving. She said “We practiced are jumps and we learned how we are suppose to have our hands ,when diving”. I was talking to my parents ,and just the top of my head ,I remember.…
For the past four years, I’ve sat through six-hour-long competitions several times a year. These competitions are an integral part of CyberPatriot, a national computer security education program for high school students. For nearly the entire six-hours, I focus on securing a Linux system by using command line, editing server configuration files, and digging through the Linux filesystem, while my teammates complete networking quizzes and work on securing Windows systems. During competitions and weekly meetings, we made frequent use of technology and security websites to solve problems and form a fundamental understanding of the working of operating systems. In my second year, I became the CyberPatriot president, took on management-related activities,…

I remember a time when I was little my mom took me and my sister to Raging Rivers Waterpark. The waterpark was huge to us it had three slides, a little kid area and a wave pool. The wave pool was always my favorite if I wasn't at the little kid area I was in the wave pool my mom use to tells stories about me not wanting to leave the wave pool she told me that I would cry or throw a fit. I remember a time when we went to the waterpark and my moms friend ask me if I wanted to go down the toilet bowl with her because I was tall enough I said yes so we walked up the hill to waited about 15 minutes in a very long line.…
My biological father was in and out of my life since I was born, he was not there for my mother when she found out she was pregnant, or after I was born. He only showed up when he didn’t have to take responsibility for me, like when I was with my grandparents or by sometimes remembering to send me a birthday card with my misspelled name and twenty dollars once a year. He always seemed to think that by saying he would see me more often if he was given the chance to and handing me money that I wouldn’t think anything of his absence. Truth be known, I always knew he never grew up himself and would never be the man that the four children he produced would need. I was okay with this thought process for two reasons: one being a had a mother that went through an unbearable amount of heartbreak having the father of her child not be involved in the life of her child and struggling to make it by.…
A father figure is a vital role in a child’s life. Some people are fortunate to have a positive role model in their lifetime. Father figures teach us about self-discipline, emotional needs, trustworthiness, independence, ethics, hard labor, etc. Unfortunately, not everyone has positive experiences with their fathers. Negative father figures display characteristics of hypocrisy, deceit, betrayal, and anger.…
It was a chilly summer day, sunny and calm with a light breeze. The splashing of waves mingled with the laughter of 65 teens. Some jumped into the lake in their swimsuits. Meanwhile, I had forgotten to bring a swimsuit. This was a rite of passage.…
Learning something new can be a scary experience. One of the hardest things I have ever had to do was learn how to swim. I was afraid of the water, but my father and aunt decided that swimming was an important skill that I should learn. They also thought it would be good exercise and help me to become physically stronger. What I did not realize was that learning to swim would also make me a more confident person.…
