For the last three years, I’ve had the privilege of going on a mission trip with my youth group to Dallas, Texas. Since the summer of 2015, we have visited an amazing group of educators, ministers, and everyday volunteers who work to bring refugees out of poverty and integrate them into the American lifestyle through faith. While I was there, I got to reach out to kids ages 2-17 years old that came from a variety of different countries. From Sunday night till Saturday morning, our team slept, taught, and ate in a small, three-bedroom apartment in a Burmese neighborhood. We would wake up to the children tapping on

We also played games that helped them learn math, English as a second language, and reading. The main part of our afternoon, we spent teaching swim lessons. A large percentage of the refugees had little to no idea how to swim, making their chances of drowning very high. However, teaching them to swim and float was so much fun, and one of my favorite parts of the week! Adding onto my favorites, I was invited to play some guitar during Bible time. Some of the younger kids had a hard time sitting still, so we took them to another room and played some fun worship songs. I watched the joy on all of their faces as they danced and sang along to the music. What makes this a significant experience for me is that I get to give back to this community of people who are hope-filled and are waiting for someone to reach out to them. I very often take for granted what I have and what I am given, and some of these people are willing to travel from miles away to see us and experience the light of Christ through our works of service and …show more content…
The issue isn’t something specific, and it often isn’t the headline of a news station. The issue is respect. We are taught by our parents, our teachers, our friends, and the media that every person has a title. If I were to say “teacher”, or “construction-worker”, you would come up with an image in your mind that displays that title. Now what about if I were to say “criminal”, “terrorist”, or better yet, “freak”, what or who comes to your mind then? It makes me a bit emotional because our world is full of sin, regardless of what you do and don’t believe in. Many of us, including myself, sometimes accept this, and disregard the fact that people are bullied every day for different reasons. This issue of bullying, labeling, and ignoring others needs to end. One common misconception that we take from our childhood throughout our life is that strangers are dangerous. A stranger is someone who we don’t know, and might look like someone who could harm us. This is false, and I believe as adults, we should do a better job of inviting them into our lives since they are humans. When someone commits suicide, I hear things like, “They had so much to live for.” or “That’s so stupid. Why would they do that?” I’ve noticed that when mass-terrorism takes place, the person that initiates the act almost always kills themself in the process,

Nikail Janet-Rose Francis is who I am. A young African-American by appearance but little does society know that the melanin in my skin represents more then just the "black community". Fortunately, my family has given me the privileged to witness successful, motivated, and accomplished individuals through their own actions. Becoming a doctor has been my aspiration since I was six years old and I asked my pediatrician "how can I be you?" Honestly, I did not originally want to attend the University of Florida.…

My eighty-three year old grandfather handed me an overwhelmingly thick book titled “Sheils Family History” and said, “Here; look through this. Maybe you’ll run into one of these people.” I suppressed a laugh, thinking of the near zero probability of me “running into” one of my distant family members as I travelled abroad for the next two weeks. However impatient, I sat quietly listening to my grandpa chirp away about our ancestors and his war stories, while I pictured myself for the next fourteen days in a completely new place.…

On a blazing hot afternoon, I was with my Peer Ministry. It seemed like our whole group, interacting with the sizable population of homeless on the streets of Riverside, CA, was working like a fast food crew; we were distributing food from our cars at a superhuman pace. This activity seemed like any ordinary job our group did together — until I handed a brown paper bag to a homeless African American man. His expression registered shock. He put his hand on my shoulder and said, “Son, how did you know I needed help?”…

Divine Trust Trusting in a divinity isn’t as easy or straightforward as it sounds. I can most definitely attest to this. As a person raised in the Christian church I have not only have I lived this statement, but over the years I’ve seen it in the lives of various friends in my youth group. I continue to see this struggle to trust throughout the plot of “The Odyssey” by Homer. The protagonist Odysseus, his son Telemachus, and Odysseus’ ship’s crew all are prime examples.…

“If you can’t feed a hundred people, then feed just one.” This is a famous quote from Mother Teresa, a well-known sister from Calcutta. She served the poor with great love and compassion. Like Mother Teresa, we get to experience living her actions by helping homeless people to get through the day. This is through the help of The Scott Mission which is a Christian Ministry of Mercy and Love.…

I have lived a blessed life filled with many great days. I have several of these days that particularly stick out in my mind such as the day my brother was born, the first day of my seventh grade play, the evening when I graduated, and the birth of my niece at four in the morning, but the day I hold above all of these was the day I spent with my extended Sanders family at the Great Wolf Lodge in Traverse City. The first reason why I treasure this day exceedingly much is that it was spent with a family that I have never gotten to see regularly. The Sanders family is heavily involved in Christian ministry.…

In order to fulfill the requirements of this paper, I attended a ministry called Common Ground. Common Ground is an after-school mentoring program for underprivileged children in kindergarten through fifth grade that reside here in Waxahachie, Texas. This ministry has volunteers that help the children with their homework, includes a reading program to help the children become better readers and improve their comprehension skills, and allows the volunteers to spend one-on-one time with the children in order to share the love of Christ to them. While attending this ministry I noticed not only one, but several social needs.…

For the multi-genre project I chose the topic of children refugees. I chose this topic because I believe that every human being was placed on this earth to do something miraculous, that would change the world for the better. My goal is for my readers to understand that life shouldn’t be taken for granted. I believe that if the world comes together as one, these refugees will no longer be seen as outsiders, and they can eventually show the world who they and their gifts.…

MANDATORY: Please describe how you have prepared for your intended major, including your readiness to succeed in your upper-division courses once you enroll at the university. Although it took me quite some time to realize, I have been preparing for my major and career all my life. When I started fifth grade, my teacher fostered my love for reading by challenging me to read books that were much more difficult for my grade level because they addressed heavy subjects. He recommended that I read Flowers for Algernon, and it became the very first book that made me feel shock, heartbreak, joy, and frustration all in a single read.…

I asked myself the question “how can we make a long-term effect on a short-term mission trip?” This idea centered around the lessons we were teaching the children throughout the day. I noticed that the children we well informed about God and how to become a Christian. Pastor Vernon gives them lessons every week, probably the same lessons we were giving them. The children were hungry for more than a preschool version of the bible.…

Volunteering at the homeless shelter is one of my favorite things to do. A few weeks ago, on a serene Saturday morning, my family and I volunteered at Loaves and Fishes. It was special to see just the sheer amount of people who had come out to volunteer on that Saturday. If you think about, they could’ve been doing anything on that Saturday morning. Yet, they decided to help give back to their community.…

As a child, having rules to follow wasn’t unheard of with my family. There was always a way to behavior with friends/family, at school, at home and out in the street. Often I found myself getting into trouble because I didn 't listen and also the fact that I always found some kind of way to slipping out of having to doing something that I knew I was supposed to do. But out of all the people in my family my mom was the strictest. When expectations set high, not meaning them meant my siblings and I typical had a week long cleaning punishments along with handing over all toys, games, and light up sneakers; about three times a week this happened to me.…
