Personal Narrative: Roanoke Valley Early College

Improved Essays
Well it has been almost 4 months that I have been attending Roanoke Valley Early College. I love it here and I don’t see how anyone couldn’t. So far I have learned a lot about school. By taking time to observe my surroundings and everyone around me, I have learned that everyone in high school is not your friend and that I am learning how to sense a bad vibe before I let anyone get too close to me. RVEC is the only school that has taught me that all teachers are not these people that hate their job because the teachers here including the ones I don’t take yet are always showing us that they really want to be there and help us and teach us. Aside from the people here, I have learned that I will face a lot and that it only gets harder. For example, when I start taking my college classes, some of the upper classmen have told me that these essays will go from 500 words to about 10 pages sometimes. So lately I have been putting extra …show more content…
Recently we finishes out budget project which consisted of our career and how we would manage the money we made from it. While paying off debts, we had bills and needs that had to all be paid for monthly. This taught us that we can’t just use money for everything we want because there are more important things to be taken care of. Before this, we talked about Maslow’s Hierarchy of needs. This chart taught us how we have to put certain needs first such as our physical needs before we can reach the other levels of our needs. It also helped us understand ourselves better. RVEC gives each student the chance to express themselves no matter what class. We have this freedom to believe what we want, to be who want, and to be comfortable with who we are and people there don’t judge us for it either. That’s what I like the most because it’s kind of hard to find kids your age to be on this type of maturity level to

I have always been independent, but I fully seeked independence when I was 16 years old. This was the year of 2016, and this was the year that my life changed; I was forced to grow up and learn how to be more independent. The first step to my seeking of independence was turning 16 years old and getting my driver’s license. This meant I was finally able to go out on my own and not rely on others to take me places anymore. In the year of 2016, I also began taking classes at Caldwell Community College and Technical Institute to earn college credits.…

For all of my life, building close relationships has been the key to my success. I form relationships successfully in a small, comfortable setting. In school, classrooms are an accessible way for myself to accomplish this with my teacher. For every teacher I was close to, the class I had with them was my top class. One of the main reasons I chose Clarkson College was because I admired it was a private college with a limited student to teacher ratio.…

Fall of 2013 I started the Early College Alliance, otherwise known as ECA. For those who do not know, when you first start ECA you take High School level classes, with other High Schoolers during your first semester. After teachers review your progress you’ll either be placed in College classes, because you’re what they call, “College Ready,” or you’ll take another semester of High School classes. During my second year of ECA, I was placed in EMU College classes. During this time I was exposed to an environment in which I was interacting with adults in a classroom setting, versus being in school with students in my age group.…

Before attending Wilmington Early College High School (WECHS), I was not satisfied with my personality, nor was I happy with the way I was perceived by other people. Most would think that I should have been confident because in middle school I was in the AIG program. However, I never truly felt satisfied with myself. I always got good grades, but I never felt like I earned good grades. Although I was making straight As and Bs, it was always relatively easy to earn those marks in middle school.…

In 2006, I began my journey at The Valley School as a first grade student. Moving over from my previous school, which I had attended from the time I was three until I was six years old, was fairly smooth. I had friends who made the switch with me and, being the social butterfly I was, making new friends was a breeze. In the first few years as a student, I saw Valley move into three buildings.…

Rudy and Maslow’s Hierarchy of Needs Abraham Maslow created a theory about how the human meets their needs. His theory contains five tiers that start at the physiological needs and continue up to self-actualization. Physiological needs are our most basic needs that get us through everyday life, such as food, water, shelter, and sleep. The next step is safety needs which is where we find security in life and is the last “basic” need. Next, we reach the need of belongingness and love, which is a psychological need rather than a physiological need.…

At first, I was unsure what Lakeshore Technical College had to offer. While looking over the many programs that are offered, the accounting program intrigued me the most. The program outcomes are: processing financial transactions throughout the accounting cycle, analyze financial and business information, perform payroll tasks, learn to handle accounting costs and its implications, perform business and private tax preparation, and identify internal controls to reduce risk. Finally, more than ever, I’m excited to share the knowledge that I have accumulated during my time at Lakeshore Technical College.…

In my English 111 class I was asked to write a comparison and contrast paper, and only one topic could come to mind. Comparing my normal high school (Northwest) to my school of choice (Roanoke Valley Early College). If you know someone who knows both schools very well, as myself, they will tell you that the two schools are like day and night. It’s so hard to believe that if I wouldn’t have gotten accepted to RVEC I would’ve been continuing at Northwest Halifax.…

Spending my time at RVEC has been a quick overlook of how things really are in high school and as being an early college student. I am at my first quarter, and it has been a quick roll with learning how to glide along effectively. This includes study skills, time management, and how to better improve my learning in all classes, even outside activities. All the skills I’ve learned so far from freshman seminar is really showing an effect with how I become successful here at RVEC. The best part that I really enjoyed about the freshman seminar class is that it makes me realize and understand what life is really going to be like when I’m first starting finish school/college, when I live the “adult” life, pursuing my career, and withholding many responsibilities.…
