“I know applying to colleges is the last thing you want to do right now, but you might change your mind,” a trusted friend told me. It was December of my senior year of high school, and college application deadlines were approaching quickly. I was recovering from a major illness at the time, and wasn’t ready to think about college. My plan was to spend a year living at home and working before I pursued higher education. In the following months, my recovery progressed rapidly.…

A motif that haunts the months of college applications and preparation is the daunting idea of seniors entering into the "real world." An alleged, new realm of reality that discredits the validity of the last few years in high school, not to mention the three before that and all the experiences previously. This concept coincides seamlessly with the idea that college is a beacon of newfound adulthood. Even so, each student's differing personality, aspirations, culture and tribulations falsifies the belief that adulthood is that straightforward. Thus, in order to define the moment that marked my transition into adulthood, I must first define what being an adult means to me.…

This class was challenging because I haven’t had a writing college course since 1997! Ten years later, I began WRTG with 12th grade writing skills; now I have learned how to improve my grammar, my writing technique, and structure my paragraphs; I feel like a college freshman again. I’ve had good experiences as well as bad experiences with my writing class. I am returning to school after a twenty year leave. When I was last in school, I was Child Development major. The only course I took at that time was a remedial “Math for College Students” that was a review of elementary school math- i.e. addition, subtraction, multiplication and division, positive and negative numbers, area, volume, fractions, percentages, simple solving for x… I have not gone beyond those most basic concepts since high school- nearly thirty years ago. In junior high and high school, I took pre-algebra and algebra repeatedly, and only ever eeked through- my highest grade being a C-. I have a fair level of math anxiety.…

Last year I took an AP English class at Buchtel CLC and I more or less learned the basics of how to write essays. It was also all independent work, with this in mind; it helped me for this English class. That AP course gave me a process of writing essays which was the same one that you gave us. When I begin to write, I brainstorm topics to talk about and then I do research on each one of those topics. After I do my research, I pick my topic then write down three points to talk about that connects to that one topic.…
