Returning to college has been a long, emotional journey for me. When I was younger I had my life planned out believing it was God’s will also. I married my husband at the age of twenty and together we entered the ministry field. God blessed us with three wonderful kids and laid upon our hearts the notion of homeschooling. Since that time I have been a homeschooling mother and a pastor’s wife. Almost two years ago my husband suddenly passed away, leaving me reeling and trying to figure out why God believed it was time for him to leave this earth. I quickly went into a downward spiral, not wanting to go on with life anymore. My spiritual life took a nose dive and while I felt alone God was carrying me every step of the way. “I know applying to colleges is the last thing you want to do right now, but you might change your mind,” a trusted friend told me. It was December of my senior year of high school, and college application deadlines were approaching quickly. I was recovering from a major illness at the time, and wasn’t ready to think about college. My plan was to spend a year living at home and working before I pursued higher education. In the following months, my recovery progressed rapidly.…

My past laid out upon a table. My GPA, my resume, my test scores. An unfamiliar man whom I met for the first time was frowning, turning around in his creaky red chair, while hurriedly trying to contextualize my life with just a few pieces of paper. For 15 minutes, he sat there, unhappy, tapping his foot, analyzing what I’ve “done” with my life. He took a sip of water and suggested that I go to community college.…

I put off returning to school because of this very topic - time management. Bethel offers several ways to help with this issue, I particularly like the online calendar as a way to keep assignments and discussion deadlines front and center. I was traveling out of state for the entire Unit 1 cycle; it was a daunting task making sure I was back at the hotel in time to devote time to my studies as well as my work obligations. So, remaining focused on keeping professional and personal worlds separate and manageable is the bane I (like my other classmates) share and must remain cognizant of.…

While I did withdraw from four courses in college, all of these withdrawals were considered “withdrawn without prejudice”; had I withdrawn because of a low grade, this would be noted on my transcript as a WF for withdraw / fail. Any class I withdrew from was not essential to my major or to my graduation requirements. I feel that these withdrawals are in no way indicative of my academic potential or work ethic. To demonstrate this point, I will detail my reasons for withdrawing from each course. In regards to Beginning French II in Spring 2012, I originally placed into Intermediate French through a placement exam, but I wasn’t fully confident in my two years of French from high school; the course I enrolled in, Beginning French II, turned out to be a review of what I’d already learned, so taking it would not have challenged me.…
