Similar to most people, a lot of my research has been through school. From research projects in elementary school on indigenous Colorado animals, to Japanese traditional architecture and many other paper based on archival research. After high school an inordinate part of my life was finding out what I want to do for the rest of it. The processes started with taking ethnographies and interviews from nurses and finding out that I was to gregarious for the short talks I would have with patients. I am really glad I looked into nursing before going to school, the nurses that were successful and helped the most people are the ones who did not perform small talk, but got in, did what they need to and moved on to the next. This process makes a lot

This week was overwhelming. I live in Seminole, FL. and lost power very early Monday morning of September 11 and my power and cable was just restored yesterday, September 17. My support system is a friend and she and her husband were evacuated as they live by the water. I was a little concern at first having to deal with the storm by myself as my family is nowhere near by. Glad to say my daughter and I may it through the storm and only had to deal with the heat.…

In my modern day vanitas assemblage, I used a variety of three-dimensional objects that are representative of my ideas of life and death, and what I find most valuable in my life. To start off I used a 16x20 cardboard box lined with newsprints and black construction paper. The newsprints represent the fleeting passage of time and the idea that history and the presence of earth will continue to be documented even after I am gone. The collections of CDs assorted are albums that have resonated within me throughout various stages in my life. Music has a way of curing the soul and translating words and ideas that at times are difficult to convey.…

I, personally, have never been the best at English, but have always had pleasing grades in the courses that I have taken. I have to work very hard for the grades I have, and although they don't come easily, I seem to pull out an A. I have never been the best at grammar or punctuation, but I overcame that difficulty throughout my English courses with my teachers. I discovered in my English 2 class that I wasn't too good at reading comprehension and figured out that I needed to read sentences more than once to fully understand a sentence completely. I am pretty confident in myself when it comes to argument essays though. I seem to always do well on that type of essay.…

“Hey Raajii, did you take a shower before or after your mom threw African food at you?” My first day of middle school was full of many microaggressions and passive aggressive chuckles. “No, but seriously, do you use that stuff as deodorant or something.” Attending an all white school in Minnesota desensitizes you to that kind of stuff. “Is it true that Ethiopians eat food with their hands like apes?”…

Years ago when I was in middle school, I would typically spend time with the same people. Resulting in not being fully aware of my other classmates and the controversy that occurred. Though one day I noticed a girl who had quite long straight hair. She had a little dawn-tinted bow that would sustain her side bangs, while her skin was a lightish brown. The girl was called out by other students, preferably girls when we were lined up in line in the hallway with half the class.…

When I was little, I wasn’t the skinniest girl. I was 4’6 and 100 pounds in the fourth grade, which was definitely chubbier than most of the girls in my class. Because of that I always stood out from the bunch, and I wasn’t the only one who noticed. My aunt would always tell me that I should lose weight because if I didn’t do anything about this then no one would like me. She believes that skinny people are the prettiest.…

By the time my sophomore year of high school had come to an end my work and creations had touched the minds of a groundbreaking 30 million people. Ironically enough, this unthinkable opportunity to connect with the rest of the world all began with what I presume to be the most defective and unbearable laptop that has ever been created. One early Saturday morning, for lack of better things to do, I went online and began creating YouTube tutorials for popular video games. At first I had little experience, made very poor quality videos, and had very few intentions of taking it seriously, although little did I know that I would eventually turn this passion of mine into a profitable business. Whilst toying among the plethora of available editing…

I have never been good with kids. I find them extremely adorable, but I just didn't have the qualities to work well with them, especially if they started crying, I would panic. We filled out a sheet with our name, city, and if we were to take this opportunity, which grade level would we like to volunteer for.…

Moments pass quickly and never return. In one moment you could win the lottery and have the biggest win of your life, but in another moment you could lose your family and face the biggest loss of your life. In a blink of an eye on December 31, 2013 my life changed forever. My father and my little brother passed away in a car accident. I happened to be in the same car as well, and the only way that I have been able to move on from that event has been by persevering.…

Language and its deceitfulness has warped my mind into a permanent shape of complexity. It’s paradoxical craft allows it to connect people, but at the same time it acts as an agent of estrangement. Migrating from the small city of Vallecorsa, Frosinone in Italy to the opportunistic, enigmatic realm of America, I envisioned my 13 year-old Nonno (grandfather in Italian) arriving at Ellis Island, and immediately being overwhelmed by a scene of confusion as he watches the flapping lips of immigration officers failing to communicate with him. Nonno followed his instincts to Boston, where he miraculously settled down and shared his language and story with his new creation of an American family. Years later, when I contort my mouth in peculiar ways attempting to speak this unfamiliar language, I fail miserably and he chuckles.…
