The smell of gasoline and fire in the air was something I was not familiar with in my homeland. In mid December my family and I went to Tecate, Mexico with a group called “Family Missionaries”, where I contributed charitable purposes.Helping others is what matters most to me. I arrived with my parents, along with other members, in cars full of donations from people in the U.S. and ourselves. It took about three hours arrived to the Nunnery. There was a line outside the fence, around 700 people, waiting to be gifted with toys, blankets, clothes, food, and shoes. As I was putting each item in its department, I was very excited knowing I was going to give goods to people who were needed in another country! I saw the eagerness in the children's

Benevolence It is Christmas morning, so you wake up and your is heart pumping with excitement to look under the Christmas tree for your presents. When you arrive your heart fills with much despair because you find nothing there. Unfortunately, this happens to kids all around the world, some of these kids may go to your school. Consequently, every year, as a tradition my grandmother gathers up all of her grandkids and we volunteer at the Salvation Army Intake Center encompassed with her church. At eight a.m. sharp we get out of the car to have the brisk air slap us in the face, we halfway jog and halfway run into the place, we meet hundreds of boxes as soon as we open the door.…

Divine Trust Trusting in a divinity isn’t as easy or straightforward as it sounds. I can most definitely attest to this. As a person raised in the Christian church I have not only have I lived this statement, but over the years I’ve seen it in the lives of various friends in my youth group. I continue to see this struggle to trust throughout the plot of “The Odyssey” by Homer. The protagonist Odysseus, his son Telemachus, and Odysseus’ ship’s crew all are prime examples.…

When I got to Colombia and walked into the Suba Foundation for the first time, I was instantly met with loving hugs from smiling and genuinely happy faces and children saying “¡Te quiero!” meaning “I love you!” In the United States, I could not have imagined such a welcoming and accepting reception from people that had so little. Many children at the foundation lived in devastating poverty, hurriedly driven away from their homes due to the civil war in Colombia; yet they were filled with so much joy and love, it surprised me. My first missions trip to Bogota, Colombia really taught me what unconditional love meant, and drove me to return that love in every way that I could, whether it be by teaching English to the kids or washing 200 dishes…

I started on the trip afraid, yet ready to impact a country as best I could. However, I see now that the Lord had a completely different approach than I, because He knew my eyes had not seen such beauty and such diversity as I as while in Guatemala. From seeing the majesty of the Lord through the natural landscapes, or feeling the mercy of the Lord through seeing the people and the simple lifestyle in which they lived, I was able to cure a need I had inside of my own heart. The Lord placed a need for more inside of me and he does so in all of his children.…

I have always been passionate about helping others, and last year, I took my ambitions to the next level when I created my own service trip to Colombia. I contacted a plethora of organization, but considering my Easter break was short, these educational organizations respectfully denied my aid. My help was finally accepted by a local convent in Bogota that houses women who are physically or sexually abused; as well as, their children who attended the convent's nursery. During Easter break, I traveled to the convent in Bogota and for ten days, I worked alongside the nuns, as well as getting to speak with the young women living in the convent. The nuns and children accepted me with open arms and gratitude.…

Rose Family Scholarship/Shafer Trust Award Roland-Story School District Foundation High School Senior Future College Award 2018 For the last three years, I’ve had the privilege of going on a mission trip with my youth group to Dallas, Texas. Since the summer of 2015, we have visited an amazing group of educators, ministers, and everyday volunteers who work to bring refugees out of poverty and integrate them into the American lifestyle through faith. While I was there, I got to reach out to kids ages 2-17 years old that came from a variety of different countries. From Sunday night till Saturday morning, our team slept, taught, and ate in a small, three-bedroom apartment in a Burmese neighborhood.…

On Sunday, November 6th, I volunteered at Nourishing Food Banks through Circle K. I had never volunteered at a food bank before, so I figured that this would be a good opportunity to experience it and learn from it as well. The food bank operated out of a small church and run by two members of the community, Diane and Clarence. As a volunteer, my duties were to help package and organize food into boxes and then bring those boxes out to the cars of the families when they arrived. While none of the work I did was clinical, there were aspects of nursing in the tasks I completed.…

This experience helped broaden my perspective on less fortunate families and opened my eyes to the needs of my community. Before volunteering, I didn’t stop to realize how many families in my community were going to bed hungry every night or how many children were deprived of food. During my volunteer experience, I had the chance to meet and help a lot of families who aren’t as fortunate as the families I meet on a day to day basis. Without charity, the homeless might go a few days without food, or a struggling mother’s child might have empty bellies for the night. Giving back to your community gives you the opportunity to ease the struggle that these individuals and families have to go through every day of their lives.…

This weekend, I had the privilege of volunteering at the Gallagher Charitable that is hosted by the baseball and softball team each year. I have had the chance to volunteer every year, however this year was much different. In years past, aside from standing around and making sure families knew where to go, I did not do very much. This year, however, I served as the Spanish translator for the event. I felt that having this job made me truly see that I had done a lot in years past.…
