Personal Narrative: Removing Dead Verbs

Decent Essays
To revise my memoir I took the steps of, removing dead verbs, I adding more sensory detail and feelings and deleting the irrelevant things that didn't make much sense. When I proofread my final draft I looked for simple mistakes and made sure it all made sense. I also got family members to read and look for the mistakes that I couldn't identify. Its sad to say but I didn't, think that I would have made it to this extend in my academic career. Indeed, at the beginning I did not have any confidence, or pep in my step like most enthusiastic freshmen would have, knowing that their creating a new chapter in their college careers. When people act obnoxious and disrespectful, I would just like to go up to them and say “I was at about six there. Don’t make me go to ten”, a quote said by Dale in Step Brothers. My pet peeves involve the disrespectful actions of high school students. It really irks me when people in band just don’t play their music correctly or march properly. If we have been practicing the same song for a short amount of time, then I understand if most don’t pick up the notes right away.…

I couldn't agree more, sometimes I think to myself as well if I have any repressed memories that impact my personality. I never used to be so compulsive or expressive, but I think that has to do with a defense mechanism of mine. I know I have some repressed memories that have molded my personality to be more defensive at times, although I don't like that myself, I do feel it is a defense mechanism to be guarded for protection. I honestly did the same thing with the denial mechanism with my best friend during high school. I was in denial because of my friends passing just wasn't acceptable, and when people approached or confronted me, I pretended as though he was on a long vacation.…

My Writing Ritual Writing rituals differ from person to person and are rarely ever the same. Some may involve eating a certain food, being in a certain room of a house, or sitting in a certain chair. There may be an individual who can only write when tied upside-down from the ceiling. Nevertheless, the two following aspects of a common writing ritual are nearly essential for success in any type of writing.…

Like most children who grew up in a bilingual environment, I had trouble discerning Japanese and English when I was growing up in California, since I spent most of the time with my mother’s family. Because of that, any English I absorbed through PBS shows was mashed together with Japanese to form Japanglish. Then I briefly attended preschool in Naha, which made it even worse. I barely made it to elementary school. My kindergarten teacher recommended me to stay another year, but my parents refused to allow it.…

“Such careful rereading can help you eliminate irrelevant material and identify sections needing further details or examples”(Lunsford, 80). The St. Martin’s Handbook provides a great deal of information that helps immensely with editing. Forgetting words or adding them is not my only problem when it comes to revising. I often forget to put a comma, space, or period to finish a sentence.…
