Relay for life is a life-changing event that allows everyone in communities across the globe to come together to honor cancer survivors, remember loved ones, and help fight back. Relay for life has allowed me to encounter many people who all share a common purpose — to support the American Cancer Society's mission. This event made me realize that everyone can make a difference and that every person counts. I believe that community is important everywhere. This has raised awareness and funds to save lives of people suffering cancer. I have gone to this event since I was 10. Every time I left the event, I left feeling so proud and elated at what the community had accomplished. Webster defines empathy as “the ability to understand and share the feelings of another.” Through my volunteer work and personal experience with cancer, I have learned that the more social support an individual has while going through a crisis, they better able they are to cope. After my grandfather's passing, I went through an incredibly tough time. The community provided my family and I emotional support that helped us better handle the crisis at hand. This experience, being my first, I took as the definition of death. As someone who wanted to become a humanitarian, it solidified my belief that giving back and helping communities identify their opportunities and challenges would allow me to work with the community to identify people’s needs and vulnerability with empathy for them.
