Personal Narrative: Reducing The Risk Of Cervical Cancer

Decent Essays
Long post, I apologize.

**TL;DR:** I *might* have HPV. I wonder how my bf would react.

I just had my first pap smear(to check for abnormal cells that have potential to become cervical cancer) + STI/STD tested. The results came out that I have abnormal cells, which *might* be due to HPVirus infection but negative for other STI/STDs.

I was vaccinated against the common HPV strains that cause cancer and warts in 2009 (3 doses over the course of 6 months). Therefore, I refused to have the colposcopy or the useless biopsy (they take a piece of my cervix out to examine under the microscope), because I believe my body will clear the possible HPV out soon by the next pap smear. Plus, I've read many research papers on IUD (which I'm getting soon) reducing risk of cervical cancer; so I'm not worried.

My current bf is my second sexual partner, so I'm not promiscuous; I know exactly who was the possible carrier (my idiot exbf, haha, I'll forgive him, since he would never know if he had HPV).

Even though it's a very minor problem to me, I'm going to tell my BF as I don't want to hide anything from him. I'll give him all the following information and give him the choice to leave me if he wants to:

* The strain of HPV that I might have is like a common cold virus. It's totally not HIV or Herpes viruses. We're both clearing it out in the next 12 months like how we clear out the cold

Human papillomavirus (HPV) is a group of more than 200 related sexually transmitted viruses that can lead to cancer and disease. The most common vaccinations given to adolescent boys and girls to protect against these cancers are Cervarix and Gardasil. Cervarix protects against HPV 16 and HPV 18, whereas Gardasil protects against HPV 6, 11, 16 and 18. Gardasil was approved by the FDA in 2006 and Cervarix was approved in 2009. Since Gardasil is older, it is used more frequently and has more data collected related to it.…

Rhode Island’s HPV Vaccination Requirement: A Topic of Controversy Human Papiloma (HPV) infects about 14 million Americans a year; however, only certain strains of the virus—known as high risk strains—are carcinogenic (Vaccinating Your Preteen or Teen, 2015). Others are more or less benign. Cervical cancer in females is the major carcinoma linked to high risk strains of HPV which can be transmitted through sexual contact. Other cancers associated with the virus include vaginal, vulvar, penile, anal and oropharyngeal cancer (Vaccinating Your Preteen or Teen, 2015). Since the introduction of HPV vaccines—such as Gardasil and Ceravix—in 2006, HPV transmission and associated cancer rates have significantly decreased (Marsa, 2014).These vaccines…

Unfortunately in my mom’s youth, she made unwise decisions that eventually led her to contract the human papillomavirus (HPV). I conducted an interview to get more information on the story of how my mom, Alicia Giddens, contracted this horrid infection. At the time, my mother was 25 years old and had just recently “separated” (Giddens) from my dad. She said, “I met someone from the gym and we started a relationship that lasted for several months” (Giddens).…

HPV Vaccine In today’s society people are more likely to receive a sexually transmitted infection, but what people don’t always know is it can be preventable with a vaccine. Human papillomavirus, also known as HPV is the most common sexually transmitted infection in the United States. There are different types of HPV; most types can cause many health problems that include genitals warts and even different cancers for example cancers of the throat or vagina. Health advocates are stressing the importance of vaccinating against the virus due to the strong fact it’s so common that nearly all sexually active men and women get it at some point in their lives.…

If a woman is infected with HPV virus, it would take approximately 15-20 years for the infection to develop into cancer. Therefore, it is not likely for a woman, who is 65 or older, to suffer from cervical cancer if she acquired HPV infection during that age. While several factors can contribute to the result of getting cervical cancer at the age of 65…

Mark, The thought of acquiring a human papilloma viral infection can be a source of anxiety due to the fact that most cases have no symptoms and go undetected (Giacobbe, 2011),which may add to the fear because available statistics may not be representative of its true magnitude. If someone does not know they can transmit the virus to another individual, even the most well-intentioned person practicing safe sex could easily pass this along, even with a kiss. That just makes it more important to receive the vaccine at a young age, before the initiation of any form of intimacy takes place. The vaccine itself is FDA approved and part of this process involves determining that it is safe, has few side effects, and is effective (National Cancer Institute,…

According to Laia Bruni et al. in the article “Cervical HPV Prevalence in five Continents: Meta-Analysis of 1 Million Women with Normal Cytological Findings,” Sub-Saharan Africa estimated prevalence is 24 percent, Eastern Europe 21.4%, Latin America and the Caribbean 16.1%, Southeastern Asia 14% and North American region 10.2%. (Bruni el at.). J. Burdach PhD in his article titled “Human Papilloma Viruses: New challenges for Infection Prevention, postulates a number of lines of evidence that support the risk of transmission in the clinical setting. First, “that HPV is resistant to desiccation and can remain infectious when exposed to a typical dry room environment for a number of days; HPV DNA has been detected on the fingers of individuals with an active infection, showing that infected patients can carry the virus on their hands and act as a source of infectious virions, and there is evidence that HPV can be transmitted via touch, as low-risk HPV infection by self-inoculation has been documented in children in cases where no signs of sexual abuse can explain the transmission of genital warts.” In 2006, Merck, a U.S. company developed HPV vaccine, called Gardasil.…

As years go by, the number of cancer patients have increased and since the HPV vaccine has been around so long and proven to prevent certain cancers, I don’t see why people wouldn’t take this vaccine to prevent them from getting cancer. Like the phrase, “it’s better to be safe than sorry” applies to this situation greatly because if the vaccine to is proven to prevent cancer than why not take it just in case if in the future you might find out that you have cancer and you could’ve prevented it, but you didn’t take the vaccine because you believed in all the stigma without looking at its benefits. In conclusion, I would support in taking this vaccine rather than falling into the stigma of not taking it. As I said earlier, I support this vaccine because it could prevent certain cancers and this vaccine has more pros than cons.…

Introduction In 2006, the human papillomavirus (HPV) vaccine was created to prevent both HPV and cervical cancer, two serious diseases that affect millions every year. HPV is a group of sexually transmitted viruses that causes infectious papillomas, which are benign tumors, to appear at the site of infection. It is the most common sexually transmitted disease (STD) and according to the Centers for Disease Control and Protection, or CDC, “nearly all sexually active men and women get [HPV] at some point in their lives” (CDC, 2012). The majority of the time, HPV naturally goes away and does not cause any major complications, but in some cases, it can cause various cancers.…
