Personal Narrative: Rebuilding The Chicago Community

I hadn’t been home in almost a year but as I rode through the south-side of Chicago I noticed nothing but run-down buildings throughout the black and brown communities. What was once local shops, churches, community centers, schools, homes, and gardens were now replaced by empty lots filled with patches of dandelions and weeds. Developing and uplifting communities of color has been my main focus for several years. Recently, there has been a perpetuated distortion of Chicago; without any signs of rebuilding the community, restructuring the educational system, or providing any form of economic support. If history had shown us anything, it is that we can not depend solely on the governmental system to provide equitable access to economic, social, and educational opportunities.

My parents did the best they could rising three black girls in the disinvested urban areas of Chicago. My father having a high school education and my mother only a year of community college. They continue to be a wonderfully supportive but weren’t able and aren’t able to provide the financial support needed for my education. Throughout my undergraduate studies I accumulated debt due to the student loans needed to cover university fees. Additionally living and working in New York makes it extremely difficult to save and invest while balancing a healthy lifestyle.

Loiello played a principal role in increasing US students attendance to SOAS, University of London through fundraising and a valuable supporter of SOAS. More than a sole financial support, this speaks to the scholastic and innovative durability of a community. The John Loiello AFSOAS FISH Scholarship will encourage me to development as an individual abroad and impact my future tremendously. By being awarding this scholarship it will provide me the financial stability needed to focus on my education and exhibits the university’s confidence in me and my ability to continue SOAS and John P. Natalie Moore shares her own view as a black women living in the south side of Chicago, examining how racial segregation within communities has created a “white” and “black’ Chicago, leading to racial inequalities. Moore asserts the importance of diversity within Chicago, but suggests that racial inequalities and the “legacy of segregation and its ongoing policies have kept the city divided” (Moore#). She links problems such as underemployment and violence which are directly associated to the south side, and connects it all back to segregation.     In terms of racial demographics, the foreign born community continues to outnumber the rest, however this community is no longer dominated by those of European or ‘White’ descent as “the number of Mexican and Chinese residents has grown” (1). Conversely, the road to a life in Bridgeport for Blacks is still quite narrow as they only make up about 2.4 percent of the population today (Bridgeport, Statistical Atlas, 1).
