Personal Narrative: Rathdrum, Idaho

Rathdrum, Idaho Where you are from does not define who you are, but it does shape you into the person you are today. So if you were to ask me where I was from I would gladly tell you I am from Rathdrum, Idaho. A small town where only a few truly know what is like to live here and only a few know how amazing this small city truly is. Rathdrum has been the only place I have ever really known; growing up and being raised here I never have had the appreciation for where I lived. But in hindsight I am slightly ashamed of how much I took this wonderful town for granted. My great grandparents used to own and manage Twin Lake Resort and my grandma and her sisters used to clean and do maintenance around the resort.

My dad changed career paths from auto body to landscaping and my mom stayed on the path of nursing. All was good and my life seemed picture perfect. A house secluded enough in the country and family living only miles away. Felt like nothing could go wrong in this little city. However, in 2008 my great grandpa passed away and the family had to decide what to do with his house. So many memories flooded back to me. I remembered spending Christmas here as a little girl, proudly dressed up to match my sister. The shag green carpet and yellow appliances all have a special place in my heart. My parents wanted to keep his house in the family and began renovating. Renovation was rough and lasted about a year, but finally the house was finished and we moved in right away. Ever since then, this has been the place I call home. Even though I call Rathdrum home, many people do not know about the small …show more content…
It is like my second home, this city is where I spend summers visiting family, playing at the local beach, and enjoying the sun. However, not many people think Blackfoot as a summer getaway; when Blackfoot comes to mind many people familiar with the place think of potato agriculture and processing. In fact, many of my relatives work in the potato industry. Blackfoot is also known for the Eastern Idaho State Fair. This fair is legendary to the locals and non-locals alike. My parents still reminisce the days before me and whenever they do, they always bring up the fair. Telling their stories of crazy fair food and amazing

Normally when telling people where I am from many people do not know where I am talking about until I tell them it is by Coeur D’Alene. Although Rathdrum is not a well-known place, I still believe that Rathdrum is like the perfect small town you read about in a book. One reason is that a person can get the feel of small town living but still be only eight miles away from the closest big city, Post Falls. Also the picturesque scenery is like it is straight out of a picture. I am very lucky to be have been able to grow up in a small town with the abundance of lakes and beautiful mountains.…

Growing up in Vail, I would often ride the chair lift with strangers and they would ask, “Where are you from?” I would reply “here.” The people I shared the chairlift with would tell me how lucky I was, but I would just smile politely and nod, unaware of my fortune. I had grown up in mountains and didn’t know anything different. As I have gotten older and been fortunate enough to have traveled outside of my familiar mountain range, I have realized how intensely beautiful mountains are.…

Lemoore, California. The 559, the 93245, the small rural town located in the central region of the San Joaquin Valley. A place that will melt flip flops to the ground in the summer, yet it will have people gathering around a fire in the winter with their hands wrapped tightly around a steaming cup of cocoa. Not much goes on in this town and it is not quite what someone would call a vacation destination, but there is indeed something special about this town. This special characteristic is the way religion connects and creates a family out of the majority of people who live in this town.…

Your peripheral vision is gone—there’s complete focus, then a silence so muted that all you know is the feeling of your heart beating. Then, as you stand there motionless, you feel the adrenaline. I mean really feel it—a syrup coursing through your veins, yet not a syrup as it moves faster than blood. You know when it hits your heart because it starts beating faster, faster, faster, and then the feeling is gone. Then everything is gone—emotions, breath, sensation……
