It’s a Latin phrase that means deeds, not words, and it accurately describes my journey as a writer and storyteller. Although I love writing, from short essays to novels, my words can only take me so far. I have hundreds of unfinished stories locked away in a drawer in my room, but I only began to improve my writing by seeking out a workshop where others could critique my writing during my summer studying at Stanford University. I love to debate with other people, but it was much more fulfilling to create a Debate Club in my school where others could freely share their words. Though the production itself has come a long way, I see problems in many films with the way women are represented, especially in the Marvel films I love so much. It upsets me, but that is not enough. If I cannot accept it, I must change it. This is where my skills as a Humanities student would be useful. During my four years at the Scholar’s Center for Humanities at my high school, I have learned how to use language, art and critical thinking to persuade people to consider my ideas. Through classes like AP English Language and Composition, Modern Art in America, and Honors Topics in Philosophy, I’ve learned how to write papers and give presentations for my ideas and beliefs. The program helped my confidence grow and made me realize that my words can make a
