Personal Narrative: Raising My Own Children

Improved Essays
I believe that a majority of my generation engaged in ‘quiet or secret’ delinquency – it was not brazened and just out in the open as you see now. And, it was NEVER the type of trouble that involved the law! Quite frankly, my daddy would have beat me to within an inch of my life if I had embarrassed him in that way! Raising my own children – eleven years between oldest and youngest – I experienced a considerable difference in the attitudes of ‘children’. My oldest son and his friends were respectful and, for the most part, stayed out of trouble; however, my youngest son and (a majority of) his friends were mouthy, and seemed to ‘be a magnet for’ and stay in trouble – both within the family and the law. However, like the ‘Growing Out of

Central to this take on delinquency is the idea that criminal behavior is learned behavior (Sutherland and Cressey). This is to say that it is not an inherited trait, but a behavior that has been picked up by association with those engaging in delinquency (Sutherland and Cressey). Much of this learned behavior comes from the observation of how those around you view legal codes (Sutherland and Cressey). There are those whom view legalities as rules to live by and those whom do not (Sutherland and Cressey). While this tends to reference socialization among peers, a more unique account for this theory can be taken by the examination of a lack of protection afforded to these profiled youths and their developing understanding that legal codes do not offer them the same protection they might a white male coming from a higher socio-economic background.…

The Person I have chosen to write this forum on is my mother. I grew up in a home where her parenting style was very authoritative. This has strongly made an impact on my life and how I am perceived by my friends and others. My mother was very consistent with boundaries however; she was always open to discussion. My mother had furthered her education in child and family services and therefore, implemented many skills in our home.…

Surrounded by a team of nurses, one doctor, and what seemed to be a grouping of blinding lights, I had a peculiar moment of serenity. I can’t quite explain whether it was the epidural or the fact that for twelve hours my body was engulfed by excruciatingly painful contractions which seemed to be attacking me in a sporadic manner, but in that one moment everything was perfect. Somehow I just let go off every single fear I had, I just remembered that in any moment there would be an extraordinary occurrence. Although a natural part in many women’s lives, since the beginning of time, it was a phenomenon in my life.…

One way that my parenting has changed is that I have added more rules that I expect Finley to follow. Finley told me one day that I have more “rules” than other kids’ parents. Finley is usually in a good mood and has a cheerful personality. She tends to use humor to deal with stress or shrugs off little upsets that happen throughout her life. Even though it happens rarely, she does come across a problem that gets her upset.…

It was a pleasure to meet you at the Crain’s Chicago Real Estate event yesterday. I enjoyed hearing about your daughters at Northwestern- you must be really proud of them! It’s an incredible school, and it must be nice to have them nearby. John, we actually have an interesting webcast coming up titled “ Your children and Money” designed to help parents teach their children money management basics- the number one complaint I hear from college graduates is that they were not taught to handle money in school. I hope you don’t mind if I send you an…

My concern is about the fact that the children are taken outside for more than 15 minutes in the cold, rainy or misty weather. Both my granddaughters have been attending the location in Morrisville since the beginning of October 2015. Those girls were never sick for more than 5 days, but have been sick since the third week of attending this center. Although I have no complaints about any of the teachers, they are loving and caring, I do feel that it is up to the adults to decide when the weather is favorable to let the children stay out for more than 15 minutes at a time. Yesterday, January 7, my younger granddaughter was outside for over 45 minutes in a 40 degree misty weather; that was despite the fact that I've called the Director and…

My daughter has always loved to write. At first it was in childish scribbles, done in crayon or finger paint, but for her eighth birthday I bought her a beautiful calligraphy pen, and now it’s almost all she does. She’ll sit in her room for hours, writing until she runs out of ink or comes down to dinner. She’s started school again recently, and despite my initial worries she’s made so many friends; she has one over every few days, and each time a different one.…

Shaping My Life I made myself into the person that I am today. I’m kind, caring and a person, which led me to change the way that I think and the atmosphere around me. I’ve always been caring and kind to others, and I’ve always thought about wanting to help people for the rest of my life. I changed that way that I think in several different ways, including changing how shy that I was and how I wasn’t looking people in the eyes when I talked to them. I also changed the way that the atmosphere was around me, by working hard in my life, and figuring out who my real friends were.…

As a child, having rules to follow wasn’t unheard of with my family. There was always a way to behavior with friends/family, at school, at home and out in the street. Often I found myself getting into trouble because I didn 't listen and also the fact that I always found some kind of way to slipping out of having to doing something that I knew I was supposed to do. Growing up, since I lived in Mexico, I did not have much of interaction with a different race.
