My friend, Joe, used personal motivation to concoct new practices that ultimately led to his success in losing weight, exercising and quitting smoking. For example, I introduced Joe to the “My Fitness Pal” application to monitor his food intake. In addition, I invited Joe to my home gym to exhibit the correct methods to lifting weights and completing cardiovascular training. Frankly, the most difficult aspect was encouraging Joe to quit smoking; He admittedly smoked over a pack of cigarettes per day, and as a result, quitting would prove to be challenging. One day after boxing class wrapped up, he revealed to me that nobody had attempted to motivate him to change; I was the first person to not only inspire him, but actually act on my words. It was the ultimate satisfaction when my friend achieved his goal. On the flipside, Joe was experiencing social motivation and social ability from me. Social motivation asks if those closest to an individual motivates and enables them. Prior to myself, Joe did not receive any sort of motivation or enabling from his peers, but I helped facilitate change. After I forced Joe to make the undesirable desirable, he surpassed his own limits. I acted as a positive influence by providing encouragement and assistance, which is also known as social motivation and social ability. My ability to motivate and enact change enabled Joe to personally motivate himself and to take steps necessary to make changes.
This personal narrative exhibits the use of four of the six influence strategies: personal motivation, personal ability, social motivation and social ability. These are the four pivotal sources of influence in the world and are necessary to enact change. Overall, producing a personal alteration is rarely completed with the use of one’s own will power.
