Many times I wished I was just hanging out with friends and surfing without any care. So, after many days, weeks, and even months of procrastinating, It occurred like a flashback...I remembered the times, having so much fun surfing without all the adversity...So, I decided to simply stop.Doing so made me feel even more comfortable in the big Pacific Ocean.Trying any style, trick, or board without any pressure. With surfing, there is a lot of variety and contrast, but that’s what I think makes surfing so great. Overcoming the struggle to surf is one of the greatest things I've ever done, and to this day I'm still learning new things.Going to new beaches, and trying to catch the biggest waves are always an adventure.Weirdly, it has made a huge impact in my life simply learning a small skill. So I try to influence everyone, to go out and learn how to

When I was 12, my father showed me the documentary, “ESPN:20 for 20-Hawaiian; The Legend of Eddie Aikau.” This documentary opened up a whole different world to me. I was never the type of typical person who enjoyed to surf, unlike half of the people in Hawaii. As being a Big Island grown girl, I liked to bodyboard rather than surf. Surfing is more of an O’ahu kind of sport.…

I remember my uncle taking my cousins and I to Duns River Falls in Jamaica. At the bottom of the falls he took me from the shallow ends to the deep end, a good area where my head remained above the water if I stood on my tippy toes. My uncle laid his arms underneath me and taught me to relax and float. From time to time he would slowly remove his arms, allowing me to float without his support. I would freak out when I realized that his arms where no longer there holding me.…

I had been wakeboarding before so I knew how to, but it was my cousin's first time, so it was funny to watch them because they fell a lot. They couldn’t even stand up for a while, and once they would stand up they couldn’t keep their balance and would topple over. We also had a lot of fun tubing. Sometimes, we would play games on the tube, like seeing who could stay on the longest without holding on. After we were tired out , we got to tie dye shirts.…

Stedman examines the surfing subculture of Australia and acknowledges the changes that have been made in the process of post modernisation and how specifically these changes have impacted on women. The methodology Stedman employed for this case study was varied and included analysis of text and image in surfing magazines and surf books, analysis of surf films, analysis of the surfboard as an object and through her own personal experience as a surfer interacting with and observing other surfers. Stedman concludes that the process of post modernisation has not created gender equality for women. I am interested in this article as is focuses directly on women’s status in modern surfing subculture.…

Surfboard design has always been a very personal thing. Shapers tend to be surfers themselves, and board design is as much an engineering feat as it is a love for surfing. Professional surfers work closely with shapers, as each surfer rides waves differently, and they know better than anyone how their surfboard needs to perform. Surfboards have evolved as surfers tackled new ‘liquid terrain’. Ancient Hawaiian surfboards…

I never really thought too much about racism when growing up. Maybe that is due to my upbringing. I was raised in a small diverse country town where, for the most part, everyone got along.
