Personal Narrative-Racial Discrimination In United Parcel Service

Improved Essays
I am a 32 year old female who enjoys working, and meeting exciting people. Retail and customer care has been a huge part of my life for over ten years. A major life changing event for me was being wrongly terminated from my job due to racial discrimination.

Last spring, I applied for a customer service position at a local United Parcel Service franchise store. I was so overly excited to be working at a well-known company. When I started, there was so much to learn, and it made me feel that I had finally found a decent job. The employees there seemed to be so welcoming and the owner as well. As the weeks and months progressed, the work was booming, and my customers were my best part of the day, but that was soon to be a thing of the past.

As he approached my counter, I noticed he seemed a bit agitated. I asked, “how may I help you?”. He replied that he needed some paperwork faxed. Once I received all of this information, I attempted numerous times to assist him, but the number was incorrect. Immediately, the guy became very loud and disrespectful. He forcefully removed his paperwork from me, stormed out the store shouting out racial slurs. He turned to me, and stated that he was well acquainted with the owner, and he would be sure to get me terminated. Soon after, I called the owner to discuss the incident, she became sarcastic and unprofessional. I quickly realized that this job was not for me. I strongly feel that because of racial discrimination in the workplace, most people lose their sense of value and pride. No one wants to go to a job where because of their race or skin color their criticized, cursed out, or belittled. I feel that every employee deserves the same fair treatment. Unfortunately, that wasn’t the case. The next day, I was in fact, terminated and somewhat

Under Title VII of the Civil Rights Act of 1964, no employer can discriminate against an employee based upon race, color, religion, sex or national origin. When Shaun is demoted by Montgomery ’s it was because the customer (Phil) made a false complaint about her supposedly saying a racial slur towards Phil. Thus under federal law Shaun was not discriminated against because the law only applies to undesirable employer actions against employees based upon Title VII of the Civil Rights Act of 1964 which is race, color, sexual orientation, national origin and so on. Shaun being demoted was not based on those examples; it was based on her alleged behavior.…

This week’s lecture by Professor Dan Gilbert and the excerpts of Tera Hunter’s works titled “Domination and resistance: The Politics of Wage Household Labor in New South Atlanta” and “Dancing and Carousing the Night Away” portrayed the role labor relations played in relation to inequality. It is quite interesting how the relations in the workplace mirror those in the community and across the nation. Tera Hunter discuss how workers challenged daily inequality in the workplace and Professor Gilbert made the social and political implication of their actions more obvious. In the workplace power is an important thing and those in power often abuse it.…

In addition, it helps to stop discrimination whether it is intentional or unintentional. It applies to any employers who have 15 or more individuals under their umbrella. This act has been enforced by the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission, also known as EEOC. Their primary job is to investigate a manner if an individual has filed a claim, and try to arrange a settlement between the parties involved.…

It has been generally seen that employees are racially discriminated by not providing them due promotions and benefits which they deserve. It completely based on an intention of an employer to suppress specific race. This attitude becomes more obvious and visible in a workplace when an employer intentionally subdues promotion of a deserving employee of black race. This was an embracing situation for me to work in an organization where people are discriminated on the basis of their…

One ethical issue that is prevalent in the workplace is that African American has to work hard to get promotions than any other race. In the minority relations, Manning states “ Everyone--regardless of age, color, creed, or sex should be treated equally” (Manning & Curtis, p. 2003, p. 135). In all my work experiences, I have worked in companies that have only a handful of African American that are employed in the organization. I have seen favoritism with regard to promotion and job opportunities to employees that were not qualified. They neglected other employees who have eligibility.…

I 've heard so many stories about how people of color are being and have been discriminated, but I never thought that I would become an actual victim to racial discrimination. Once during the summer, me and a few friends of mine decided to go to Walmart because we wanted to have a splash day being that the temperature outside was at 95 degrees, so we needed to buy some water guns and balloons. By…

However, I have also had some negative experiences associated with race. One negative experience-e I have had as a result of my race happened when I came to college. I had been working at a Target back home and decided to transfer to a store closer to Cabrini.…

Another tragic memory that pumped some sense into my head about racial identity and ethnic disparities; was when my elder brother was arrested on the basis of being black. My brother was wrongfully arrested because a Caucasian officer expressed that he saw him rob someone. Upon arrival at the scene trying to understand what happened, that officer expressed in his words that “ nigger you know you robbed that store”. I couldn’t believe that this was happening to me because, I have always heard about situations like this. The officer made more remarks such as, “you niggers are always stealing”, “you niggers will always be shit”, and you are going to pay for this crime even if you did not do it.…

Also, when considering salaries or promotion, it is discrimination to give raises or promotions to one racial group over others who performed equally well. Racial discrimination at the work place can be broken down into three different types.…

The Houston runway was quickly disappearing beneath me, the plane ascending, leaving my stomach dismantled on the tarmac. I couldn’t believe what was happening. I was truly on a plane, by myself, headed to Buenos Aires, Argentina. My mother laughed at the thought of me living abroad; consistently making it known my ideas were childish, financially unstable and unattainable. With a slight grin pulling at my lips, I close my eyes and begin to wonder what the world will look like on the other side of that airplane door.…

My ancestors constantly had to either push against the boundaries discrimination confined them in, or try to hide their culture entirely. This caused their sense of security to deteriorate. This is one of the main differences between my ancestors and I, they lived in fear and struggled because of their identities, whereas I am hardly aware of my own, and society has not forced me to be aware of it, to try to hide it, or to act any differently because of it. When my family immigrated to Canada they changed their name, possibly from Obertas but no one is certain what it originally was, to O’Bertos, to try to mask their Ukrainian heritage. The ones still here are much more concerned and frightened when they see discrimination, whether it is in…

Discrimination of race is present in politics through the places of work because people are getting fired for defending what they believe in as well as being judged for their opinions. In Newark, New Jersey a professor was fired for defending a blacks lives matter event. The administration said they were "immediately inundated with feedback from students, faculty and prospective students and their families expressing frustration, concern and even fear that the views expressed by a College employee (with influence over students) would negatively impact their experience on the campus”(Schmidt). This example shows discrimination of race because the school board made the decision to willingly fire a teacher because she went through with an interview…
