Personal Narrative: Punk Rock Show

It was the spring of senior year. I can still remember the feel of the excitement thrumming through our veins – my friend, Zoe and mine. We had met up before the concert to ride together after showering and dressing up while simultaneously dressing down to attend our first official punk rock show. Promptly after getting there and eating a pre-show meal of hot but still greasy, pizza, this being one of many shows for us so we knew the etiquette, we noticed a line for a second show immediately following ours. We knew it had to be major to have people lining up hours before, and sure enough it was partynextdoor, an act I had tried to get tickets for myself months previous, which I voiced to the members of the line, to which they replied, “dude, just sneak in if you can.” I shoved it to the back of my head, because we were about to go in to see Modern Baseball, Knucklepuck, and a plethora of other punk bands in the coming minutes complete with lots and lots of moshing. …show more content…
It helped that we were pretty much “seventeen without a purpose or direction.” I mean why else would we spend our weekends listening to mediocre singers spew relatable obscenities around us and treat it like gospel, but that is a different story. This is the story of two best friends sweating in a crowd of hundreds in the very front of the punk concert as everyone around us ran in circles, and crowd dived, while we received the occasional punch in the face, screaming out the chorus to songs that we related to a lot more than we should

When I first heard that we were going to be doing another speech I honestly was not happy about it at all because like many of you I was ready for school to be done for the summer. I began to think about it though and instantly I had three books that popped into my head and I thought that this assignment was not going to be hard. The three books that came to mind was: Coming Back Stronger: Unleashing the Hidden Power of Adversity written by Drew Brees, Friday Night Lights written by Buzz Bissinger, and the last one was Through My Eyes: A Quarterback’s Journey written by Tim Tebow.…

After hanging up from talking to my mother, I decided to take her advice. If I have to watch the Rocky Horror Picture Show for class that it would the best if I was to actually experience the show, this culture, this step into the past, instead of just watching the musical on my laptop and thinking this is the strangest musical in the world. I looked up if there was even any showings still of this musical, and lucky there was one this the Nuart Theater, of course the midnight showing. The price was only $11, a price I luckily could afford as a poor college student. I called up a few friends, family members, and my roommate…

We were going to hear them sing, to us, and it was amazing. When you think about seeing someone in concert you think about someone you have been dying to see. The night before we left for Shakopee, I studied the bands, what kind of music they played and what they sounded like. Very few of them became favorites, as I am very picky the kind of music I listen to. I was scared because I was still fairly new to this, but by the end of the night I wasn’t scared…

I was so excited and almost couldn't control myself. When I found out I was going to get to see my favorite band live in concert. I freaked out It all started with my dad talking about how he wanted to get work off to go on a little trip. I had no idea what kind of trip he meant but I just went along with it. He asked me what my thoughts were about heading to a place called Mt. Pleasant and go to the Soaring Eagle casino and go to a concert and he would take me and my sister and his girlfriend would go with.…

This birthday party has been the most special for me because It is my daughter's 4th birthday and she choose a very hard one: The Powerpuff Girls. I've been a Powerpuff Girls fan since the day they came out, eight months ago my daughter found them on Netflix and it was love at first time, and she decided that it will be her birthday theme. I already have a specific idea for her party, with a bright pink, kiwi green, aqua and different tones of violet color palette, I created this birthday concept. We choose the venue and designed the invitations, and I started with planning and organizing every vendor, printing, crafting and details to the end.…

Back in the gang I was fourteen years old when I saw the perfect image and decided to back out. I was about to break into the Jamesons house. Back in the rich neighborhood, back in the gang, back before everything changed. We rode up to Fall Creek, the neighborhood. After driving through the big, confusing, dark neighborhood at night we found a house with a black plaque that said, ‘Welcome to the Jameson’s’ Jacob, Tyler, Ra’shawn, Andrew, and I walked to the back of the gray house.…

Standing underneath the Friday night lights is always nerve-wracking, but this time it was even more so than normal. It was the first time I have ever performed on the football field as a majorette; which is a very big accomplishment for me. As the drum major calls the band to attention, I pose and try to calm myself down. When the band starts playing, I start performing, but the thing is that it was nothing like doing during practice. This time I was not even thinking.…

ACME Rock Shop: The hastiest yet most instinctive business decision of my life. It was late 1979, and at the age of nine, I had already developed an encyclopaedic knowledge of all things Rock & Roll. When I wasn’t busy playing hockey like a normal Canadian kid or taking Hammond Organ lessons (unlike any other normal Canadian kid), all of my free time was spent flipping through stacks of my parents’ classic rock albums, reading Circus Magazine, Creem, Hit Parade, and occasionally braving the dusty shelves of the local library to pull up anything I could find on The Beatles, The Stones, or The Who. By the age of nine I had certainly earned what could be considered a solid Bachelor’s Degree in rock musicology.…

Now, our journey takes us into the heart of the gathering. Suited up with all necessary camping gear and clown face paint, I blended in with the Juggalos and proceeded to what the Juggalos called, “the carnie- grounds.” Walking down into a valley filled with nearly 8,000 Juggalos, there was no turning back. Merchants were selling hatchets and katana weaponry near the entry gates and next to them where Juggalos selling assorted liquor. Police officers were scattered through the grounds, but did not seem concerned about any of this.…

Have you ever listened to your favorite band or singer on a CD and then listened to them love? There’s a big difference isn’t there? In my opinion, seeing a singer perform live is better than hearing them on a recording. I have been to quite a few concerts. I would rather pay the money to see a person or band live, than buy a CD or their newest album on iTunes.…
