The Salvadoran cumbia produces a relaxing, peaceful environment whereas the Puerto Rican salsa and reggaeton create a convivial, dancing atmosphere. These genres perfectly sum up both of these countries. While visiting my Salvadoran side, I have witnessed a room filled with my many relatives along with classic Salvadoran dishes: juicy carne asada (steak), citrus chimol (pico de gallo), delectable coliflor en escabeche (cauliflower salad), and typical arroz con frijoles (rice with beans). The children run around giggling while the adults have a formal conversation with each other as the TV quietly murmurs in the background. Now, with my Puerto Rican side, it’s a whole different story. They turn a tiny gathering into a huge festivity. While partaking in a typical Caribbean reunion, I have noticed a room consisting of my multitude of relatives along with a variety of food, with the main dish being the famously savory arroz con gandules (rice with beans) with pernil (pork roast) and flan occasionally making an appearance. The children sprint across the room screeching while the adults dance and loudly converse with each other as Marc Anthony or Don Omar blare through the speakers.
My diversity has influenced my life through my academic work ethic and the power of community. Even though the countries’ languages and social interactions differ, we still maintain the common theme of community.
