I recollect as a youngster growing up on the resplendent island of St. Croix being an active member of my elementary school’s quadrille group. I was about ten years old. I recollect the carnival parades, going to horse races, attending the St. Croix Agrifest in February and attending the festival village in December. I recollect learning how to macramé in summer camp. I recollect learning how to paint mocko jumbies, and make papier mache fishes in art class. As a child art was a consequential part of my cultural upbringing. One might ask, what are you doing now to preserve Virgin Islands culture?
