Personal Narrative-Pole Vaulting

Improved Essays
In the spring of my sophomore year I decided to rejoin the track team. After the first week, I noticed a new coach was on the far side of the football field working with a few kids teaching them to pole vault, so I went over and started to learn the basics of vaulting. A few practices went by, and my coach thought it was time for the beginners to start vaulting with a bar. My first attempt was an utter disaster; my back hit the bar and I fell straight down onto it, where it left a pretty sizeable bruise. Ted, my coach reassured me that I’d get the hang of it after more practice. Weeks and meets went by and I still hadn’t cleared a bar. What was I doing wrong?
I began to seriously think about quitting to focus on my other events, so asked

I Corinthians 9:24 states, “Do you not know that those who run a race all run, but one receives the prize? Run in such a way that you obtain it”. We had to take off our shoes and socks and put on special orange grip on the bottom socks. The place was pretty big.…

In my life time I always been successful and unsuccessful but, one event that I consider to be very unsuccessful was when I didn’t push myself as much as I should have in Cross Country varsity race. I consider this to be one of my biggest failures because I didn’t force myself to keep up with the guy in front of me nor, did I force myself to keep up even with my teammates. I suffered in that race and questioned myself “Why am I doing this? Why do I even run?” I was morally and mentally crushed during this race and it just made me feel even worse when I found out during the race that I was in last place in the entire time I was racing.…

I was cleared from both my doctor and physical therapist to compete once again. My team and I walked across the gym to our next event, the vault. Like my front handspring, I had practiced this hundreds of times. All I had to do was run down the runway, jump on the springboard, and use the power from the springboard to flip over the vault. It is the same concept as a front handspring, but with a giant spring board that gymnasts use to get over the vault table.…

Failure Happens In the sixth grade my father dragged to a wrestling practice at Milwaukie High School for the youths league. I was ecstatic about the whole thing even though I didn’t know a single person at the practice. I met the coaches who were great at understanding that I didn’t know much about wrestling perse but knew a lot about grappling because I had done jujitsu before I had gone to any wrestling practices. Something no one knows is that after the first practice to see if you really wanted to wrestle the coaches came up to me and said “Your name is Ricky right?…

I think it made it especially hard that I hadn’t been that into the sport from the start, but on top of that there was also the factor that I didn’t really have anyone to disappoint if I wasn’t performing my best. Looking back at it now, I know that I underperformed a lot, and didn’t try as hard as I probably could have. Taking into consideration that this had also been a very busy time in my life, I had looked at it as though, if the I was the only person who would lose if I didn’t do well, then it was a small…

As I was reading a book about figure skating I got from the library one day, I turned to a page titled “Advanced Jumps”. I was about twelve, and I was not nearly ready for most of the jumps on that page, especially the second hardest one, a lutz jump. I had seen a lutz before, and I knew that it was the second hardest single jump besides an axel, which has an extra half rotation. I had never even done a single jump before, but I immediately wanted to try a it, because I had always wondered what landing a “hard” jump felt like, and besides, I had a lot of free time on the ice because I did not have very much to practice yet. I told my mom and my coach that I wanted to try a lutz, and they both agreed, and my coach even said she could help me…
