This disappointing thought hovered over me during every practice and match, but I didn’t let it affect me. Walking onto that court, I knew it was going to be a tough match. The team we were playing was the team I previously played for during middle school and freshman and sophomore year before I moved to the new school, so I knew the team, the coach, and the parents, making me even more nervous and nostalgic. After my team on the other court lost, which I didn’t know as I was playing, I ended up being the last court playing. About 50 people consisting of parents, varsity and junior varsity players, the middle school team, and coaches came to watch the deciding match. My main motivation to win was the fact that that was my last match, but I also knew that my team was depending on me. The match was getting even more difficult; my opponent and I were using challenging strategies to get through each point. Every time I won the point, my team cheered, making me feel supported and even more eager to win. After I started player better than my opponent, I was ready to win and end the match. And I've even sat down and cried. In frustration, happiness, and just because that was the only thing I could think to do. I was standing by myself on the bright green tennis court, gripping my racket. Groups of other tennis players were leaning against the chain link fence, waiting, like me, for tryouts to begin. Listening intently to the conversation going on around me, I was trying to get absorbed into what was going on. After what felt like forever, but in reality was only minutes a friend of mine and returning player walked over to me. Having not seen each other in a month or so we both greeted each other enthusiastically.…

A whole season of hard work and commitment had brought us to this chance to move into a first place tie in the conference. Moreover, with a few winnable games left, we had the chance of an outright conference championship. For me, this game meant a lot more. I was feeling validated for the hard work I had been putting into practice even though I was not a starter. I was showing strong teamwork and helping the offense run better with strong fundamentals and understanding of the coach’s desired offensive approach.…

There is always time for another game when playing backyard ball, but on the true gridiron, you have a set number of games, with extras coming at a season of hard work. This isn’t a story of a come behind win or a game lost after a tough dog fight. We lost by over 40 points that day. We were outplayed, outcoached, and outskilled. With 13 players to cover 22 positions, 11 on offense and 11 on defense, we simply did not have a chance against a team of 30 that was in their third season together.…
