Since my second semester at UT, I have devoted 15 hours a week to volunteering as a Young Life leader. Every week I help run a club meeting for dozens of high school kids, manage a planning meeting with my teammates, and lead a small group for sophomore girls. I spend hours at St. Stephen’s Episcopal School watching games and performances, and simply getting to know these young adults. Through investing this time to build relationships as a mentor and role model, I strove to show these girls that they are significant, noticed and valued. Volunteering as a Young Life leader has taught me invaluable lessons in building relationships, caring for others, and working with a team that will help me to be a more supportive and productive physician…

One of the most exciting things that have happened in this new semester of school is having the opportunity of attending a service learning class. Personally, I believe that it is important to engage not only in educational programs, but also in service learning courses that will help us grow as service agents and leaders in our communities. Having the opportunity of working hand in hand with the House of Loreto is not only an enrichment opportunity, but also since I am studying Occupational Therapy it helps me to have a deeper understanding of the elderly population which I plan on working with in the future. Working closely with the resident Eileen Miller helped me to have a deeper understanding of the course readings and how the elders…

I am Daphne Williams, I'm originally from a small town near Pensacola, FL where growing up my parents pushed to work hard and do right by my elders. I never thought going to school to further my studies would be an option being that it wasn’t enforced in my household growing up. A few years after graduation of high school I joined the service after realizing that minimum wage wasn't exactly what I wanted to continue with. At the time of joining the service I realized I wanted to be capable of doing so much more but had little or no direction as to what I wanted to do exactly. After completion of my first two years in the service I hated it until I crossed paths with a great leader while deployed in Afghanistan.…

Joining the JROTC program has shown me that life has more to offer than what it seems. With the help of the JROTC mission of “To Motivate Young People to Become Better Citizens," I am one step closer every day to being the person I have worked so hard to be. This mission has helped me learn the values of law, truthfulness and trustworthiness, and has deepened my moral courage. Reading and reviewing the text, I have come to realize the true meaning of the law. It is there to help and protect people who cannot do that for themselves.…

Every time the Star-Spangled Banner played over the speakers as I lined up for one of the many soccer games in my playing career, I was overwhelmed with patriotism. Serving as an Officer in the Navy JAG Corps will allow me to fulfill that sense of duty and continue to pursue my passion. When I first learned about osteopathic medicine I was attracted to the idea of the holistic approach of working with the patient to treat the whole body and not just the disease. This osteopathic philosophy is supplemented with what I had learned during my time as a Public Health student where the focused was on heath education with an emphasis on preventative medicine to help the individual and community. I came to this realization when I was observing an osteopathic family medicine physician interacting with a diabetic patient that was non-compliant with his medication that came in for a cut on his calf that was not healing properly. The physician proceeded to explain how by not taking his diabetic medication, affected his calf from healing…

I meander my way past the screechy screen door, letting it creak back into position. Immediately, I am assaulted by the smell of Cheerios, cashews, coffee grinds, and cookies from the Dollar Bin at Price Chopper. Thanks to the ever-present orchids sprouting throughout the house, the discounted snacks’ scent soon fades into oblivion. The gurgle of the Poland Springs bubbler echos in the background as I fumble for the hanging light pull. As I let it ricochet towards the ceiling, I jump at the sound of popcorn exploding on the stovetop, soon to be strung around the ten foot Christmas tree.…

Unexpected Vocations Some individuals call serving in the military their patriotic duty and others indicate it is their calling ; however, most military members call it their job. Upon receiving gratitude for serving in the military, most members reply “I was just doing my job.” The readings from Addams, Hardy, Campbell, and Buechner help me view vocation from multiple aspects with the consideration that my first job was really a vocation, but not the only one in my lifetime. Through the readings I have a better understanding of the meaning of vocation, and how just out of high school I found a vocation without even identifying the work as a calling.…

I joined the debate team when I was in the eighth grade and I did it all throughout high school because I really enjoyed the activity and being a part of a team. I was the captain of the team my senior year and this gave me the chance to step up and assume a leadership role and be a role model for the younger students just like the captains before me were a leader to me. Both of my debate coaches, Mr. Martino and Mrs. Shea, acknowledged how I was a strong leader and a role model on the team. They both wrote extensively about one of the main reasons I was such a good leader was because I worked hard and motivated my peers to do the same.…
