I was standing by the race track, the cars flew by at incredible speed. The announcer said the blue bullet in lane 4 won the race. The crowd was applauding and cheering. That was the end of that pinewood derby, now we wait for all the results and then the trophies. My Dad, my brother and I have been involved in a group at our church called Christian Service Brigade or CSB for short.…
Nolan county is a great place to grow up and live in. I happen to reside in Roscoe and go to school there. I moved to Roscoe when I was going into the fourth grade, and I am glad I did. Where I moved here from is a place that I am glad I got out of, I would’ve most likely be getting in all kinds of trouble there. Nolan county saved me from all that trouble.…
As my second level 1 Fieldwork, I chose to volunteer for the Raleigh County Special Olympics Cheerleading team. There were four cheerleaders whose deficits ranged from Down syndrome, psychological, speech, low muscle tone, also across the autism spectrum. In which, Cheerleading enhances the following: attention span, comprehension, organization, sequencing, increased endurance, postural control, and increases social skills. Over a course of a month we gathered to participate in the learning of cheers and a competition dance. The support the athlete’s family had showed during practices and competition was influential to not only their child or family member but to me, as a volunteer and as an Occupational Therapy Assistant Student.…
It was a night like most others in the abandoned ghost town. All I saw was darkness and shadows creeping around every corner. I heard the howls of coyotes and the hooting of owls through the midnight air. The whistling wind rang the rusty, wind chimes dangling from the old run-downed mansion. The sign above read “Muddy Creek Manor”.…
“Mariah, please report to Mr. Levine’s office for a meeting.” A weight dropped on my shoulders and I began to become very nervous. One by one we went into our assistant principle and athletic directors office. I slowly walked in and sat in the chair near his desk. He handed me a letter, which told me I was to represent girls’ soccer in the 2015 Tobacco Free ______.…
The town I grew up in was Charlotte, Vermont; it is located about 20 minutes away from Burlington, Vermont. Charlotte was tiny population sized compared to Burlington even though it was much bigger geographically. It was a small town, but it was an amazing place to grow up. Growing up…
I was driving down Montana 28. Legally Blonde was blaring through my speakers as I looked at the beautiful scenery. I was only 2 hours from Glacier National Park, which sounded like nothing after my grueling 10 hours leading up to that point. Suddenly my car slowed to a stop. I couldn’t go above 3 mph.…
"Have patience",exclaims dad every day we work on the farm. Some days on the farm are easy like just feeding cows. Other days are long and hard like pulling a calf at midnight or having to fix something when you need it the most. But every day on the farm is fun and relaxing. I don't like fixing something in the middle of summer on the one hundred and ten degree days.…
In elementary school, I participated in my school's Best Buddies program, where students spent one day a week hanging out with students with special needs. My time at Best Buddies quickly became my favorite part of each week. Throughout middle school, I continued my involvement in special education by spending time at Ready, Set, Ride!, a horse ranch with adaptive equipment designed to enable children with special needs to mount and ride horses. This program inspired my desire to be involved in special education programs. For the past two years, I have continued to fulfill my passion for special education by planning and attending monthly socials for adults with special needs, hosted by the Western Dupage Special Recreational Association (WDSRA).…
About two years ago, I moved to Grass Valley, CA. Truly I tell you, this was a brand new experience. My whole life was centered around the city of Elk Grove, my previous city. My friends, family, and everything were there. The day I moved was exciting, a chance for new experiences, but at the same time I felt something new: pain.…
As an adult, I can now appreciate how lucky my childhood was. Madison, Wisconsin as my home town has made me value the rich culture and opportunity that it offers. Madison is a town that fits many lifestyles. As with many diverse and dynamic towns, culture, sports, and food are what come to my mind when describing Madison. A liberal college town, Madison offers unique art galleries, music, festivals, museums, and various community events throughout the year.…
I felt sorry for them and myself because it affected my senior season but I knew it was my chance to step up. During the second half of our sixth game I got my chance. I went in being confident of myself and knew my responsibilities. I stayed in my zone and kept my eyes where they're supposed to be.…
On June 16, 2008 my family and I took a trip to Pennsylvania. It was an eye-opening experience. On the trip we met an Amish couple that changed the way I will look at life forever. No cell phones, television, music, none of that.…
It was a warm, summer day in Boone County, West Virginia. I was just a kid at the age of four at the time. I was living with my mother, and we are going to court for some reason. It was in Charleston, West Virginia and we had to be there by six o' clock. I did not know what was going on until my teen years.…
“Woohoo!” I said as I zoomed up the roller- coaster tracks. I was at Knott’s Berry Farm with my friends from church. It was my first time going and it was totally awesome. I was really looking forward to going with my church.…
