Personal Narrative: Philmont, New Mexico

Philmont, New Mexico, one of the most beautiful and wonderful places on earth.
Philmont is a two week wonderful camping trip that changes your life for the better, whether that be the good times you had on the trip, the beautiful breathtaking views, or the extremely hard backpacking you have to endure, for me it was a little bit of each.
I bought some new shoes, and I wore them on the trip. So as we headed to new mexico it was a extremely long trip. It was around 8 hours, so we made many stops. At our first stop I came slowly out of the car. It was nice to get some fresh air. We saw a mass of restaurants. Some guys ate burgers, some guys ate tacos, and some guys ate sandwiches. That would be the last “real food” we get in weeks.
As we arrived

As teenagers growing up in Powder Springs, Georgia during the 1980’s, it was somewhat challenging at times to find safe and entertaining ways to occupy our time. Even though we did not have free reign to do as we chose, I would not categorize my parents as extremely strict. Relying on our parents, as if they were our personal taxi service, my sister and I struggled to find activities relatively close to home. After discovering we really enjoyed skating, we spent countless Friday and Saturday nights at the Sparkles Skating Rink in Paulding County. The indoor facility was a safe environment for teenagers, which provided my parents with a certain level of comfort to allow us to gather with friends.…

Since I was born, I have lived in Laredo; throughout, my time here Laredo has grown tremendously along with the community here. Recently I turned eighteen and recalling back all those years is nostalgic, but gratifying at the same time because in those years I have been able to grow along with my family. As mentioned before, I have lived in Laredo my whole life and although the majority may dislike Laredo for their own reasons it has truly been a blessing for my family and I since the day we arrived here. To begin with, my parents moved here before they had even gotten married, solely for the reason of a better future as well as opportunities for themselves and their families.…

Two thousand five hundred eighty-seven. I could take an eight-hour flight or a casual thirty-seven-hour drive, but no matter what, I am still two thousand five hundred eighty-seven miles away from my home in New Haven, Connecticut. Being a college freshman, trying to juggle class, homework, projects, studying, sleeping, eating, and athletics; finding the travel time to go home is an almost impossible task. Add in the cost of the $600 flights round trip and there is no chance a student can go visit home when they feel a little homesick. I on the other hand had never even fathomed being homesick from the frozen tundra I called home.…

This March, my family and I took a trip to Mexico for vacation. We did many fun things down there such as; parasailing, went on a boat for a day trip, sail boating, went swimming in the ocean, buggy board, sand volleyball, swam in the pool, walked the beach at night, got henna tattoos, a dread in our hair and went to the club with my brother and Emerson. The sand on my feet, the crashing of the waves, people swimming in the ocean, the smell of sunscreen and the wonderful taste of my flamingo drink; Mexico is my kind of place to be. But the first day in particular sticks out to me the most, the day we went parasailing and sail boating. Waking up in the morning in your soft hotel comforter, gives you a great feeling.…

Earlier this summer I went to Cimarron, New Mexico on a high adventure backpacking trip exclusive to the Boy Scouts of America. I backpacked for 14 days through the desert, stopping at unique and interesting camps every day. It was an amazing learning opportunity for me, testing my endurance and putting me through some hard challenges. I thoroughly enjoyed the experience. The crew left in June, starting in Colorado for the weekend so we could acclimate to the time difference.…

Every morning was like a repeat of the last, when you live in a small town with nowhere to go. Desert Hot springs, California, is just that small town with nowhere to go and not much to do. I just turned 18 in my senior year of high school and everything flipped so rapidly. “Kayla Shupe…” my mind was racing as the judge called me up to the stand. Several cases before me proceeded to show the lack of mercy from our assigned judge.…

The Climb to the Top In the summer of 2011 I went on a big cross-country trip with my uncle. I was excited because I had never gone on a trip this long; but I was also nervous because I had never spent much time with my uncle and didn’t know him very well. We were going to go all the way from Nevada to Minnesota, a 1,700-mile trip to visit my aunt and cousins (his sister and nieces). We started by packing his truck to the brim with supplies.…
