Personal Narrative: Pheasant Hunting

I put my truck into park and turned the key and the low hum of my truck died. I glanced outside my front window of my truck at the vast seemingly never ending expanse of snowy grass prairie. The seat next to me sat my dog Bud who was already starting to whine at excitement of the land in front of us. It was a cold day, low 20s and wind gusts of 30 mph. Small snowflakes flew through the sky. The ground was covered with a thin fresh layer of snow. I looked at the time, it was 8:55 “close enough” (pheasant hunting doesn't open until 9 in the morning). I opened my truck door and stepped out. I was immediately got hit by the frigid cold wind that seemed like the gusts went right through my jacket. I tiled my truck seat forward and unzipped my gun …show more content…
Bud was staring up at him. He even seemed surprised. I raised my gun and slowly found the bird in my sights. He was flying directly away from me. Which made for an easier shot. I placed the small golden bead of my sight over the quickly flying away rooster. I slowly squeezed the trigger. My heart dropped as I watched the rooster crumple and fall into the swamp. I yelled for bud to go get him but he was already charging into the swamp towards where the rooster fell. To my surprise another bird flushed as he enters the cattails but it was a hen. I waited on the edge of the swamp as I watched bud search for the bird. Then I saw him jerk his head downward. He had found the rooster. I called for him to bring it to me. Bud trotted over happily with the rooster in his mouth I grabbed it from him. It was a beautiful golden rooster with very bright red and white coloring on his head, long tail feathers and good long spurs. It was the perfect old rooster I had been searching for all hunting season.

Me and bud continued walking the rest of the day didn't see any more though. It didn't matter to me though I had gotten the big old bird I had been wanting. The sun was falling and the weather still hadn't cleared up. I had hardly noticed the burning cold wind since I had gotten the rooster. With the sun falling behind bud and I we walked back to the truck. Bud piled into the back seat and layer his head down. He was tired as was I. I took the rooster out of the back of my jacket into a plastic bag on the seat next to me. I turned the key of my truck and the low hum start

So it finally snowed! I’m happy that it finally did and I built a snowman during the storm and it looks kind of…squared you could say. Since the snow is heavy, more of the leaves are now fallen off and it’s starting to look like winter. Today I went to my grandparents’ house to spend the few nights until thanksgiving. While driving out there, the corn fields and the bean fields were all covered with snow, you could tell that the deer were out and about since you could clearly see the footprints in the snow.…

(A playful writing influenced by A. A. Milne’s ‘Winnie the Pooh and Beatrix Potter’ Stories) I gaze from my window to see a slight rustle in the conifers, picking up my binoculars with curiosity I notice a wood pigeon fluttering about; my imagination gets the better of me, thoughts rolled into a story. I don’t believe in happy endings; but I will try and write something with a good end to it and no better way can a story be brought to life than through the antics of wood pigeons. There was a group of eight pigeons and in that group there were five males and three females; I know the odds are not looking good for all the males and some will miss out and, of course, it is generally the weaker ones. It was spring, that time of year when…

It was a brisk fall morning in November. I had woken up extra early just to make sure I could make it out to my stand before the sun would peek above the horizon. I’m not much of a morning person, so waking up can be a difficult challenge for me. Since it was just my first year of deer hunting, my dad had agreed to sit out in the stand with me just incase any trouble came about. I quickly brushed my teeth, got dressed in blaze orange from head to toe, grabbed some snacks, and began the journey out to the stand where I would be sitting for a while.…
