SICKNESS DOESN'T DISCRIMINATE

Most people don't understand that your health and life are gifts. When you hear the word "hospital" people mainly think of the elderly. It just so happens that some children stay in hospitals to get tested or treated. Not many people think of children in hospitals. It must have to do with assumptions based on how children are young and healthy. Last year, I was one of those children in a hospital. On August 13th, I went to a bakery with my mom and brother. I told my mom that I wasn't feeling well. I held on hugging my mom. That was it. A few seconds later, I lost consciousness. I fainted. I have fainted before, but my mom just thought it was lack of water and/or nutrients. This time was different. When the school year started that year, I still felt fainting symptoms. This continued throughout the month of September. Until, my mom decided to take me to the hospital to see why I was feeling bad.

It is a fairly new hospital. Due to its recent development, there weren't any machines like an MRI, CT, or CAT scans. The hospital had to transfer me to another hospital that goes by the name Baptist Hospital of Kendall on an ambulance. Once we arrived, paramedics took me on a gurney to my room. As I was moving, I saw children that looked sick in their rooms. Their tired eyes made them look no older than 6 years old. Since I had to do some tests that weren't ready that day, I had to stay at the hospital for a few nights. I had to wear an I.V during my stay. It was extremely unpleasant and uncomfortable. During the nights, I would hear children coughing dryly. It saddened me. According to the tests, I was diagnosed with something called Vasovagal Syncope which is

While working as a Scribe at the Emergency Room in San Bernardino, I have been confronted with many difficult situations, including the death of children and the death of people my age. One particularly difficult case for me was when an eight year old boy was brought into the Emergency Room by his mother because he felt sick. Upon arrival, the boy was having a hard time breathing and had one episode of coffee-ground emesis. We immediately brought him to a bed in the back to stabilize him and begin diagnostics. Approximately an hour later, he began to seize and soon after that he went into cardiac arrest.…

Others are not so lucky. Because it's so unknown, many people do not believe it to be a real condition. So when we cancel plans because we are not feeling well enough to go out (or even have company), our friends and family often give us the cold shoulder and say we're making excuses. No, we're ill and shouldn't have to prove how sick we really are in order to fit your standards of being "sick". With more awareness, perhaps they will finally believe that we are not making excuses or faking…
