It’s the middle of winter and the air is freezing cold. My cheeks are numb, I can feel my breath, and my mouth feels dry. My face is the only part that's not covered. Im wearing my favorite green snow cap and a new red scarf with blue stripes. It's wrapped tightly around my neck like a boa constrictor ready to eat its prey. My jacket is thick and hard to move in. The sleeves are a little short, but my gloves are tucked into them. I'm also wearing earmuffs that are as soft as cotton balls. I can barely hear “Jingle Bells” playing in the background of Rockefeller center in New York City. In front of me stands a tall, green Christmas tree with hundreds of little arms holding up shiny ornaments and bright lights. The Rockefeller Christmas tree

On 06/01/2018 at approximately 1654 hrs. , I responded to the 100 blk of S Main St in reference to a drunk male without a shirt on harassing people walking while being aggressive. The caller advised the male also cornered two young women of the street and was harassing people in their vehicles. I made contact with the male without a shirt on and identified him as Boyd Douglas Wagner, W/M, DOB 06/23/1975. Wagner had a strong odor of intoxicants coming from his person.…

Monstrous skiing hills Lie in the distance. We pull into a parking lot shadowed by the ski lodge. I jump out of the car expecting a surge of cold to wrap around me, but it doesn't happen. Instead, it feels like a pleasant spring day, but with snow. I ditch my winter jacket and grab my hoodie instead, I think about taking off my snow pants but then decided not to, my jeans would be soaked by the end of the day.…

The snow always fascinated me as a child and that fascination has stayed with me into young adulthood. Something about it invariably grasped my attention, coerced me into halting whatever I was doing at the moment to watch the flurry of snowflakes with wonder. It was winter of 2013 and even though I was at the young age of ten, I had this queer feeling. It felt like there was something missing, as if there was an empty void inside me, I couldn’t pinpoint it. That feeling came by often, especially during that year, and I felt like nothing would ever get rid of that awful feeling.…

Each tree is dressed generously in silver and gold like the Burl Ives song from Rudolph the Red Nose Reindeer commands because I solemnly and sincerely agree and trust an animated snowman with the voice of an angel. They also each have ornaments chosen carefully and lovingly each year of my life- representing to me not material things- but hours of time spent with my family. All of this comes to an end at home, next to our personal tree, as we each anticipate dad's reading of The Night Before Christmas. No matter how old I grow, I fully expect to dream of dancing sugar plums that Christmas Eve. Christmas Day, of course, begins by the lighting of Christmas candles and the reading of the birth of…

Picture a young, reserved girl sitting in a crowd of rowdy children all screaming about inconsequential things, her head ducked down as she explores a fascinating book. Now picture a noisy teenager, getting in trouble for talking too much to her best friend in the class. Think these are two different people? No, both of these girls were once a shadow of me fighting to take control of my personality. I had been quiet my whole life, feeling content with living life in the background.…

My father was lecturing me about how I was forgetful, how I couldn’t pay attention and how my concentration was lacking. I knew I had a condition called ADD, and that my family loved me, but my father didn’t have to jackhammer my flaws into my brain all the time. This happened often, and he said these things knowing full well about how badly I felt of myself. “A slow worker,” “You can’t keep up,” “You have to rely on others.” Those were all the statements he said to me.…

The Christmas Tree After all the feasting on turkey, dressing, giblet gravy, macaroni and cheese, potatoes, and so many desserts we get fat just from looking at them, we came home and put up a Christmas Tree. This is a pretty common occurrence around the country, but for me it is the first Christmas tree that has been in my house in forty-three years and the very first for my children. One of my favorite photos in my mother’s collection shows a tiny me sitting in a red rocking chair under the Christmas tree on Christmas morning. I am wearing a brown and green striped long sleeve shirt and a pair of brown jeans that appear faded in the picture.…
