Personal Narrative: Peer Mentoring

Leadership is beyond giving orders. It is having the right amount of confidence, intelligence, and self-respect to not only be heard--but listened to--by others. In high school, one of my greatest leadership accomplishments occurred through a club called Peer Mentoring. This club has given me a whole new perspective on leadership and has helped me to develop skills needed to be a strong, respected leader. I joined this club at the beginning of my junior year and its purpose is for upperclassmen to mentor the freshmen students coming into the high school building, welcome them into a new environment, and help them transition with ease. When I was a freshman, I was nervous weeks before the first day of school. Not only did I worry about coming …show more content…
We met them a week before school started at their orientation, introduced ourselves, and took them on a tour around the building. Beginning the first day of school, I began visiting the homeroom and familiarizing myself with the students. I found that some were very approachable and others were more secluded and it was harder to get to know them. Eventually, they all opened up to me and I became attached to many of them. Throughout the year, we held many events such as a volleyball tournament, a football game tailgate, and an ugly sweater party. My homeroom entered the volleyball tournament together as a team and asked me to join them. This was an instance in which I felt greatly accomplished and realized that Peer Mentoring was exactly what I wanted to be doing. By going to the homerooms and talking to the classes of freshmen, my public speaking skills greatly improved. My team-work skills and social skills also improved tremendously because I met many different people and learned how to efficiently work with the other mentors. I enjoyed it so much that I applied for a position as a Senior Peer Mentor. Out of the forty Junior Peer Mentors, only five are chosen to move to senior

My junior year in high school, I became a student mentor in our campus’s peer counseling program. This was an incredibly rewarding experience as I had the opportunity to help freshman students assimilate into our high school dynamic. As a peer mentor, I assisted students with personal problems and mediated issues with teachers in order to maximize their learning experience. I also acted as a role model for my mentees by talking frequently about AP and Honors courses and how to be successful in such programs. I put effort into learning about each individual's interests and goals so that I could expose them to clubs and academic courses that they may appreciate such as the Biomedical Academy or our school’s robotics team.…

Throughout my teenage day I’ve always wanted someone to mentor me and show me things in life that I can one day use in the future years to come. An experience that displayed my ability to mentor was during my time helping out at Columbus Elementary School. There was one boy named Presley and he had trouble focusing, so I often ended up at his table trying to draw his attention away from his peers and towards his work. He was struggling with math, subtraction specifically and heavily relied on finger counting to do any problem. After about two weeks doing number lines and tally marks, he greatly improved and no longer needed any help for simpler subtraction.…

There are multiple ways I am a leader within my community. The main way I lead my peers is through sports. I have been on my different teams; volleyball, basketball, track, and softball have all given me the opportunity to build my character and to lead by example. I was the volleyball team captain for my junior and senior year, so many of the younger girls were looking up to me. The best way to lead is by your actions; I would always go hard in practices and games to show the underclassmen that in order to get the best results, you need to give it your all.…

I believe in peer support. After the birth of my first daughter in 1981, I joined La Leche League and found strength in connecting with other new mothers. From 1986 to 1996, I was a La Leche League Leader with the Irondequoit group. By then, I was the mother of five, four of whom I homeschooled; this was another area where peer support made the difference between muddling through and thriving. In 2004, I was devastated at my diagnosis of breast cancer.…

Being a leader is not an easy job. You have to put everybody before yourself. Leadership is more than just leading people in the right direction. Being leader doesn’t mean being the boss of everybody, that’s a completely different thing. Leading is actually working with the people and going through everything together, you don’t watch them do everything while you tell them what to do.…
