It early spring in March of 2015, my best friend, Patricia Faulk, and I were awakened to a knock on the door. I slipped on my glasses and stumbled over, calling out a”Wait a minute.” to stop the knocking. I unwrapped the duct tape we had on the door knob used to keep my little brother and his friends out. Once the door was open, I stared groggily at the person to find my step-dad. I straightened up at the look on his face. He started to explain the situation. My grandmother Patsy, who had a big hand in raising me, was in Loris hospital with double-pneumonia. My older brother would watch: Patricia; my little brother, Josh; and I, until Patricia’s mother and little sister came to pick her up. Josh’s three friends had already gone home. I exited the sauna to find Josh dead asleep on his bed, he and his friends had decided to do an all nighter the night before. Aaron and I sat in the living-room watching MTV and joking around, trying not to think of current events. At noon, Aaron woke up Josh, and I fixed lunch. Josh had humongous bags and dark purple, almost black, half circles under his eyes. He grumbled, hardly speaking, while he ate the Ramen Noodles I had prepared. After he finished, he put his ear buds in and played his video game. Aaron and I continued to watch TV, while conversing a bit. A while later, Josh’s best friend, Riley, Called him, saying that his mom said that he could come over and stay awhile considering the circumstances. A few phone calls were made and soon Josh’s friend’s mom came and picked him up. It was no trouble, since they lived down the road. Aaron and I were once again alone. Hours later, and MTV was still on. Our parents and younger brother, who had been picked up on the way back, finally returned, baring Santino’s pizza.
