Personal Narrative: Part-Time Job At Saks Fifth Avenue As A Style Advisor

Improved Essays
This summer I got a part-time job at Saks Fifth Avenue as a Style Advisor. My primary responsibilities are se¬lling and clienteling. The first two weeks at Saks were training weeks. The company offered lectures and computer training in the first week, and let the new employees shadow on the floor in the second week.

The training period did not feel overwhelming, but as soon as I went “live” on the floor, things became very real. Being “live” means I can officially sell merchandise and have a goal to complete every day. It was not like I could beg a professor to grant me an extension for a paper or curve the grade for a test. Numbers are numbers, and there is no excuse if I fail to achieve the set goal.

The Dollar store I went to was the one located in Arlington Plaza on Greenville Blvd. The experience was very interesting because I usually go to the dollar store for birthday and holiday supplies only. I first went to the back to see what they had in the freezer. The selection was a lot more than I expected, but it lacked in fresh fruits and vegetables. Although there were a lot of canned vegetables, they had a lot of sodium in them.…

My job as a Resident Advisor is to create an environment that is welcoming to all of my residents. This task is both exciting and daunting since one can have a floor made up of residents coming from all over the country, representing different backgrounds and socioeconomic upbringings. To build this environment you must get to know the residents and develop a true understanding of the background and diversity they bring to the floor. One of the moments that stuck out to me while trying to build this environment came from a conversation about Indian dance and the Punjabi culture. I was with a resident checking to see how she was adjusting to being away from home when she told how she found her fit on this team called Buckeye Bhangra.…

They were always asking me to go on runs and helping me with ask tasks I needed to complete. My supervisors also helped me with anything I needed. I was the assistant to the Chief Deputy Coroner this has allowed me to create a professional relationship with her that I believe will help me continue into the criminal justice field. During my two volunteer experiences I participated in for the service learning portion of this class, I had the opportunity to witness many different walks of life. I was taken in on a side of poverty I’ve never before seen, and on a very intimate level. My first volunteer experience this semester was at a local food pantry, the Pratt-Quigley center. The neighborhood around the food pantry seemed very run down and poor. Shortly after arriving there, we were directed to the room where all the food was stored after it had been donated, waiting to be sorted.…

Whenever, I needed help, other employees wouldn’t mind helping me out. There were a large number of people working there who were immigrants but no one was racist towards anyone. Everyone worked together and treated each other like a family so that helped me to be comfortable working with them. The workplace was always very clean, which also created a nice environment around me to focus on my work. That’s really a good thing because a nice working environment keeps me safe, healthy, and gives me more energy to do my work.…
