Personal Narrative: Parliamentary Procedure

Improved Essays
Our Story Parliamentary procedure is a term that usually has people scratching their heads. Every time the word escapes my mouth, people tend to give me a bewildered expression and ask, “What is parliamentary procedure?”
I always reply in the simplest form I know, “It’s the official way to run a business meeting.” I started learning parliamentary procedure in ninth grade, getting thrown on a team, a month before state. The rest of the team were all upperclassmen; they were masters of parliamentary procedure, mostly for the reason that they had been doing it for five years. We placed second at state. That is nothing to be ashamed of, but there was more; first place was calling my name. We started over the following year and climbed our way

Our team also needed a new chairman, and I snatched the part. At the 87th annual Florida FFA State Convention, my team stole the stage. All I wanted was to win. We had the talent, but it would take heart. We were a team, however we didn’t act as a team. This competition would either make us or break us. We were prepared to win. The first item on our agenda at state happened to be the test, which consisted of twenty-five, nit-picky inquiries relating to parliamentary procedure and laws. Subsequently, the scores were posted, and we found out that we had the highest test scores by five; that is almost a question per member ahead. We continued through the preliminaries, impressing everyone who watched. Even the judges made a point to tell us that we were the best by far in our flight. Our team advanced to the Finals Hall. When we drew the number, that decided the order in which the teams were to go on stage, we drew number three. Furthermore, we had to wait an hour in the holding room, waiting for our turn, thinking about what was happening in the other room and what we were …show more content…
I dreaded what was ahead. We all piled into the holding room; it was the last hour before we found out who was the rightful winner of the state. It felt as if we waited forever. Before we knew it, we were backstage about to go on in front of thousands of people; with the camera trained on my face as they announced the results. My heart was about to drop, and I uttered the words, “I can’t do

I agree with your post. I also felt that with each state having a myriad of laws that aren’t necessarily congruent with other states, let alone the federal government, would make it difficult if not impossible to have a single court. Therefore, with the way our system is set up, it is a necessity to have a multi-tiered court. When looking at the downside, I hadn’t contemplated the fact of jurisdictional conflict.…

I am known for the "American System" and known as the "Great Compromiser," however I have accomplished and been through so much more than that. Born in 1777 in Hanover County, Virginia, I was exposed to American history since I was young. In 1797, I moved to Kentucky along with many others wanting to pursue careers in law and politics. My political career began in 1803 when I was elected to the Kentucky General Assembly then appointed to the U.S. Senate in 1806. I was Secretary of State under John Quincy Adams.…

Reaching a goal and the work it takes to get there can be a long, trying process. My goal is to make it to Nationals on the Nursery Landscape FFA team. I have competed on the Nursery Landscape team since I was a freshman. As a team of three freshmen and one sophomore, our main goal was to place as high we could as individuals which would help our team score. At State Convention, I wanted to place in the top twenty as an individual.…

Failure is part of human nature, but no one expects it to happen to them. I especially didn’t think that failure would happen to me one night in May of 2015. This particular night was my sophomore year FFA banquet. The year prior I was honored with being the 2014-2015 chapter FFA historian. On this night I just knew I was going to be reelected.…

During the sophomore year of highschool, my leadership skills affected our team with outstanding victories. It was 4 O'clock, 30 minutes from the beginning of our meet against Wheeling High School. My astronaut headphones screaming into my ears, impelling me to steal victory from the Wildcats. The clock struck the 6 and it was time to stand on top of the block . The Official Narrated “mister starter” then pressed his buzzer, and I was already halfway across the pool length.…

The riding I am in has been pretty much predominantly conservative for the most part, though now that the conservative MP isn't the same person, a larger opportunity is open for the other parties (NDP has remained the 2nd most popular as far as the last 2 results went). I voted for the NDP at the end, but I was glad that I didn't have to vote strategically as I don't really dislike any particular parties. It is interesting how my family thinks of the Conservative Party, my dad for one claims the Conservatives to be racist, while my aunt (who voted for the Conservatives) showed concerns about marijuana. As for electoral reforms, I don't really see it happening outside of the NDP, but even at that, if it is left up to a referendum to ask…

I was so happy I was near the front of the line because I wanted to stand out and make them remember me. While sitting there group after group kept going in it was getting close to my turn. While lined up behind these huge gray doors waiting for the judges to call us in, I didn’t think I could make it. My knees started shaking and I felt the butterflies in my stomach going crazy. Stepping on that blue mat I thought I had forgot what I had learned that week to make the team.…

We were all glad to have placed well, but were overall disappointed in losing first place by one measly point. Setting the mood for remembering our countless failures and long practices, the seniors went around the group, giving each member of the team their own little speech. When they got to me, every single senior noted how much I had changed over the season. Listening to them recount the season to me, it truly hit me how different I was compared to the beginning of the season. Senior speeches had opened a book of memories for me.…

Personal Narrative I am in such disbelief of what has just happened, my mind is blank and I am frozen. Do you ever have moments that change the way you think about yourself? Responsibilities began piling up; I had to organize weekly meetings, suggest what members should study, and plan scrimmages with other schools. Organizing meetings and studying was not a difficult responsibility to fulfill; previous captains had planned weekly meetings every Thursday and I merely had to follow tradition and continue the preplanned meetings. However, the team never faced another school in an unofficial scrimmage, a valuable practice game against a different team to see how we would fare in the actual competition. I reached out to the captain of the East Brunswick's Science Bowl team, and we managed to organize a round robin style competition with Highland Park, East Brunswick, and JP Stevens. In addition to the practice, we also learned valuable information on other scrimmages and invitationals.…
