Personal Narrative: Parent's Place Informational Fair

Improved Essays
I was fourteen when I first discovered what it meant to be a volunteer; and I utterly despised it. Waking up bright and early Saturday morning to work without pay or compensation was such a bizarre idea to me because I did not understand why volunteers were always so cheerful and happy at early morning hours, when I in contrast, would have much rather been in the comfort of my bed fast asleep. But it did not take me long to succumb to the contagious chipper attitude -I was soon transformed into one of them. One of the people who look forward to community events like Parent’s Place Informational Fair, in which I could help people find the information they need to provide better care for their special needs child, or going down to the county

Since I was born, New York City has been my life, my blood, and bones; I have grown and lived with many different people with different backgrounds. My neighborhoods have shaped me into who I am today, I am flexible and open, like raw clay, enough to be changed and formed. Then there is the Bronx, a borough of New York, where you have to be strong, or you will not survive, a place where all races are together, and everyone is noisy. I live in a community where there are mostly Hispanics, and where there are always car passing by and honking, during the day it is the only sound you can here, and ear-piercing bird calls, but during the night there is always some kind of party, either that or just really loud music. I have grown to get use…

Audrey Hepburn once said “As you grow older you will discover that you have two hands, one for helping yourself and the other for helping others.” I have been very fortunate to discover the incredible rewards of volunteering at a young age, and through engaging in the true gift of service I have committed myself to making a difference in my community through voluntarism. I have learned countless valuable skills through volunteering that I will continue to use for the rest of my life. One of the most amazing places to volunteer is the Little Light House. The Little Light House is tuition free Christian development center that provides educational and therapeutic services to children with special needs.…

For our civic engagement project for the Redefining Leadership class, my group, Stephanie, Hailee, Christina, and I, decided to volunteer at the Ronald McDonald House in New Haven, Connecticut on a Thursday. Before we got there, we did not know what to expect, but afterwards, we truly felt grateful that we helped out a great cause. The Ronald McDonald House is a charity house that keeps families close to their family members that are being treated at a nearby hospital. We spoke with someone who works at the House and she told us that eight families were there on that day. We were able to see some people and did what we could to help out.…

Volunteering at Veterans Affairs Medical Center was one of the greatest experience I've ever had. Sitting down with the elderly and getting to know them, I noticed if more teens could actually sit down and take the time to talk to an elderly person they could gain an opulent amount of knowledge. Sitting down and getting to talk an innumerable amount of veterans as I could, I was intrigued by how each person had a story of their own going through WWII. Voluntarily, I was able to contribute to the organization by having open conversations with the veterans, providing beverages, and having a great time. It wasn't till the end of the program when my perception began to change about the organization I volunteered for, it's more than just about kids…

Thus, I enrolled in a volunteering program at Greenwich Hospital in order to not only encounter a doctor’s working environment, but also to serve the patients who are a member of my community in Greenwich. In the hospital my job can range from sorting and arranging hundreds of mails, escorting patients, helping with maintaining hygiene, to sending flowers to the patients. According to my supervisor and the volunteers’ website, there are approximately a total of 700 volunteers who the staff believe to be the unsound heros of the hospital. Due to the number of volunteers, the staff assign us to different sections of the hospital within which assigning to be an escorter is one of my favorite as it allows me to encounter patients and doctors from different departments. Gradually from observation and conversation with many of the doctors in the hospital and some of my father’s friends I perceived the drudgery, the stress, the paper works, the coordination, the management skills that are necessary for surviving in this field after having endured the hardship of medical school.…

Working with vulnerable people has deepened my appreciation for one of the NHS' core values; 'compassion'. Doctors must be pragmatic but must also be caring towards patients and volunteering has allowed me to experience this. I also developed my team working skills as I work with 2 other leaders. During my 2 week placement at Princess Royal University Hospital, I shadowed a multi-disciplinary team meeting and saw the importance of the doctors working together with…

We asked my grandpa to tell us one of his craziest stories and he proceeded by, “Myself and my brother, who was 11 and I was 13, used to love to go to the fair. And it was about seven miles from home and we would ride our bicycles over there. And it cost twenty-five cents to get in and that was too much money so we’d crawl under the fence in a ditch and get into the place. We’d go everyday, couple times a day. One reason we went was to pitch dimes.…

With the concept of “mandatory volunteerism” burgeoning within the education system, both public and private schools alike are beginning to debate as to whether or not they should all mandate community service. What is this “mandatory volunteerism”? It’s exactly as ridiculous as it sounds like. Mandatory volunteerism is the enforcement of community service within a school This concept should be negated, since it would create involuntary volunteers, devaluing the sole purpose of having community service, excluding the students’ circumstances, and replaced with a slow assimilation of civic education into schools. When volunteering is discussed, alongside civic values and moral duty, there needs to be a sense of willingness within the task…
